Right, inside the vehicle the changer sits on a plate pop rivetted to the tunnel - with the actual changer bolted to it - you can see the pop rivets and the SS bolts in my pic ( off a project ;) ) below.... ( gear knob is held on by a c-clip under the cover, and then the nut hold the knob on .... )

So, the cable outer is held into the body by the "red" clip ... and the cable inner in to the mechanism by the "green" clip ....

All fixed. Turns out the circlip on the shift cable popped off.
 
$499 here, if you can find one. I think the cable on the '93 might fit.

Just got back from a wintery drive. 5 inches overnight and still coming down. The roads are quite adventurous. A RRC with good tires is hard to beat in conditions like ours.
They are great in the fresh stuff. Packed down turn to ice snow is a pita for everyone.
