Have you tried putting it in first gear and trhen as you lift your foot up on the clutch to take up the biting point pull the transfer lever into low/high wherever you'd like it.

It sounds more like you haven't fully selected high or low range or the linkage needs adjusting.

yea alright read what i wrote before, im jus thinking of any possibilit dave, if he cant select a gear, maybe something is gone wrong eles where not the transfer box, jus thinking outloud, tryin to cover any possibility you know??

Solid it feels trying to engage. sorry for slow reply .it must be because i is a brummie in dorset.

Check the linkage. If you're lucky a bolt or summit may be jamming it. the noise you describe is like the noise of being 'not quite' in gear.

Have a look and see if the hi lo selecter lever has come off its splines ,you will need to take out the center consol to find out as I dont think you can see from underneath. Its a relatively simple job just takes awhile .Dont drill out all the rivets yet as you shuold be able feel weather its on or off the splines.
