Sounds silly, but give the wheel a wiggle while trying, could be the steering lock. Mine was a real bitch on my last car if I pulled the key out and the wheel was at a particular angle.

Done that its all free that its as if there is a alarm activated lock on it i left the windows down u see but i never put the alarm on just left it for about half hour

Persevere, ! ours is just the same, it seems to be related to how far in the key is, talking fractions of a mm., obviously not right but if I take the key in and out many times it suddenly turns with no abnormal pressure or stickiness... havent investigated as am struggling with diesel in oil, loads of new seals 3 times, not twisted, tested cylinder head inc wamred up firstOK so why ???! no fun :(

Td5's have been known to have a crack in the cylinder head in the fuel galleries whicj allows fuel to seem into the engine oil. not saying that is the case with yours, but its a fault i've read about a few times on here
