Hi there, just joined forum looking for some info on 1989 '90 defender.

I'm getting a shuddering When accelarating usually from 45mph upwards, the shuddering goes away as soon as I ease off the accelerator.
I have checked play in the forward drive shaft and I can turn it back and forth aprox 0.25" to 0.50" inch either way. There is a bit of a clunk if not careful when changing gears.

I've also got a fair bit of engine oil in the air filter housing, the bottom of the filter is wet with oil aswell.

Could anyone please give me some advice

thanks in advance

How do SIDM.

Wot about uppy downy movement in the UJs on the prop shafts front and back. Is it shuddering or vibration.

Does the engine breather still go into the air intake tube before the air filter if it does disconnect it and blank the hole off.

Hi -I'm back - Only seems to be a few 'thou up and down(y) movement in forward 'UJ'.

AND THERE IS A 25mm hose coming from oil filler cap into pipe which then goes into air filter housing.

Did you check all the UJs?

Tek the hose off and you'll solve the air filter problem, block the hole up that's left. The excess oil could be because the filter in the filler cap on the rocker cover needs cleaning/replacing. There is a possibility that if too much oil mist from the rocker cover gets into the air intake the injun could run on it.

Grunt -Thanks very much!!

Yes checked both UJ''s. Any other ideas??
I Will sort hose and check filter asap, will my pride and joy be ok to run without the breather??

If it int play in the Ujs have you checked owt else in the drive train? do you feel the vibration through the steering wheel does it stop if you slip the clutch or is it the van sides mekin the row?

Extend the hose and point the open end over the chassis rail and yool have instant rustproofing! You could do the job proply and get a filter to bung on the end.

Thanks again - the heavy vibration (Ive decided thats wot it is) seemingly comes from underneath only when ACCELERATING and just before 40 and fifty 'ish mph, then it goes smooth again, not really felt in steering tho. I went run today and is pulling slightly to left. Could it be wheel balance??

I also fiddled with the engine breather, gutted out gauze filtter inside filler cap, removed the air filter side of the hose and shoved me thumb in it, after a few seconds oil starts to weep out of rocker cover gasket, then when I remove me thumb there a fair old gush or air. Could this be serious back pressure?? gulp !!

cheers for helping

My moneys still on the UJs. It could be anything in the drive train from the flywheel to the tyres, or the suspension, it's a matter of checking one thing after the other. I know thats not very helpful but there int much you can do over the interwebthing

You need to replace the gauze or the filler cap or it'll **** oil out of the tube. You will get some back pressure, but for piece of mind get a pressure test or leakdown test done, have a look on wickipedia thingy for an explanation if your not sure.

Absolutely, two per shaft. Well known for causing vibration like fook while accelerating between 40 and 50.
