Currently don't have any heater control (ie hot/cold) as there isn't a cable, but then then isn't anything at the engine end to control it so would this work if I put it on the hose inline where the hot water feeds into the heater matrix:

Its a S3 (with the heather matrix and all the water pipes feed in an out the matrix and it does get hot) but with a Rover V8 so looks like it could work.

Yes but without the control it would be permanently hot. Having said that, my series 3 has got all the controls but despite whatever I set it to, it is Luke warm at best. Also the fan works but it can't get much air to the driver side window

The fan does work although never used it. Not sure about heat as haven't really done any significant journeys as been getting the gearbox, SU's, cam and loads of other bits sorted. Vents and windows have been open most of the time as mainly driven the last few months. I don't think its ever had a control since the V8 was fitted in 1996! be nice to get the bowden cable in and working, even if we don't use it often.

I bought one of those plug in 12 volt ceramic heaters for mine, that's flipping useless as well. For hot days, I've got a 12 volt plug in fan, that helps cooling better than the vents. For winter I'm thinking of removing the passenger seat and installing a brazier. I've looked at the mot rules and can't find anything against it.

Just bought some sticks and full canvas (not fitted yet as only got this week) so may need the heater at some point. Cooling hopefully wont be an issue (went for a sand canvas)

Contrary to Top Gear they are pretty reliable- in fact Clarkson drove mine 3,000 miles around Europe and was smitten with it. Mine has done 250k miles and was doing c30k per annum in its first few years. My wife used hers for 6 years daily until she got a company car and only had to replace consumables - AFM, tyres, etc., nothing major.
The issue arise from storing them for 6-8 months then expecting them to be happy to be used for a few months. Much better if used daily. I'm sure the same can be said for all cars.
 
I think this is a better option as it will still allow coolant to bypass the heater matrix and flow around the engine but open the valve to let water flow through the matrix if required. Should fit the existing rubber pipes without to much effort.

I think that would work okay. Only thing to watch for is if the V8 circulates at a higher pressure. Should work if the hose connections are tight.
 
Col milk bottle top with 15mm hole in placed in passenger side vent hose to make more air come to drivers side window works well.
 
When you slide the heater control it opens a valve allowing hot water to circulate through the heater matrix/heat exchanger.

As you cant get any air through the matrix without turning the fan on the valve may as well not be there.

I have removed the slide control and cable to the valve permanently. It is simply left in the open position. No hot air enters the cab unless the fan is switched on. Its a strange design but then again its a Land Rover.

You could always put a scoop on the wing inlet but without the means to block the scoop, it will constantly blow hot air into the cab. :confused:

Ta. I'll give that a go. I've bought one of those bilge blower fans but I can't work out how to wire it in the existing fan wiring. I disconnected what I thought were the fan wires but it kept working. Haynes circuit diagram doesn't even show the heater fan

Heater was an optional extra so not on drawings.

It was pretty hot everywhere a week or so ago. 34C in March last week, 14C today. You might be pleased to have your heater on.
