I have just brought a 1998 range rover 4.6 HSE. Only done 73,000 miles and seems overalll in good condition. Only thing that does not seem to work as it should is the near side head lamp wiper. After taking it out found shaft was very stiff (could not turn by hand any only just with mole grips) so ordred a second hand one off e bay. fitted it OK but then found rather than like the off side one where it wipes smoothly 4 or 5 times and them stops the replacement one moves a few degrees, pauses, then moves again and so on taking a few minutes to do the 4 or 5 sweeps. I have removed fuse 38 to try and re set but understand both sides are from same fuse and relay so not sure what to do next - anyone else had this type of problem or any ideas? Thanks

my idea - the second hand one is faulty.
Have you tried powering it directly?
 
Thanks for replys. Did apply live and earth direct to motor after and it did same (off then on etc). Don't know what third wire is for though. Seems to be a contactor that was clicking in and out. To be fair after ordering another off e bay contacted origional provider who agreed to send another so will have two to try next time. Good news is at this behaviour continued for a period of time can at least assume power was getting to motor and remained until cycle complete. Thanks again.
