Hi each and all - I am chugging my way through the jobs that need doing on my money pit Range Rover 2.7 TDV6 - Just had a replacement Torque Converter fitted ( OUCH )

One of the many other problems that I need to deal with is my Coolant system pressurising up to the point of the expansion tank cap popping to let out "steam" - the heater drifts from warm to hot to cold - No oil in water and no water in oil - no missfiring both on tickover and driving - drove it to whitby the other night ( 45 mile ronud trip ) and she never missed a beat, the expansion cap looks fairly new, pipes dont seem to get overly hard - I am getting a kind of burning smelling fumes also coming out of the expansion tank - I have posted a video clip of the popping so please chuck in your two penneths

Are you sure it’s HG?

There is a UV dye you can get. It goes in the coolant and reacts with combustion gasses so you can tell if they are indeed mixing. It’s cheap enough
 
Well other than the cold heater and cap popping - I am not sure, it has had a new thermostat ( LAND ROVER ) and coolant, and waterpump ( SKF ) strange thing is the system still retains pressure 24 hours later - leave it all night - go to it stone cold in the morning undo the expansion cap and big hiss and fluid rises back to the cold fill level - compression was only done a month or so ago and it has done hardly any miles ( second car ) the results were as follows

Drivers - cyl 1 - 430 psi
Drivers - cyl 2 - 430 psi
Drivers - cyl 3 - 420 psi

Passengers - cyl 1 - 440 ps1
Passengers - cyl 2 - 430 ps1
Passengers - cyl 3 - 440 ps1

I would have thaught that a head gasket problem would have given me a lower reading on one pot

Forgot t mention it NEVER overheats bang on the middle always
 
The coolant system has always been under pressure since I got the car ( And prior to the new stat and water pump ) - does anyone know what is the most reliable test to check the head gasket?

I could drain the system and slowly refill and see if that sorts the problem
Is it normal for the coolant system to still be under pressure when being stood for 12 hours?
Also someone told me that there is a coolant blled screw at the back of the engine ( News to me ) I just used the black plastic screw on the expansion tank - or the black pipe on the top of the timing belt cover
 
As said à sniff test on the expansion tank will reveal any gasses present in the Coolant. It could be just a weeping gasket but enough to let the gasses through.
Check it rather than wreck it!
Was there any discoloration on any injector noses or glow plug ends when the compression test was done?
 
A sniff test in definitive either it is combustion pressure or air in the system, my money is on the former IMO.

Cylinder 3 being lowest, it could be bleeding past the headgasket.
 
Hi everyone - I borrowed a sniff tester from my friend - did the sniff test ( video enclosed ) the liquied stayed solid blue - tested it in the exhaust and it turned green
I have just had a thought - I replaced the Thermostat with a new one from Land rover, I am wondering if I have put a hose on in the wrong position as there is 6 that come off the thermostat from my memory - also yes the fan starts fast at start up and then gradually slows down - the Temp in the car is perfect, never gets hot

I have never bled the system ( after I have drained and refilled ) also the previous owner must have had a similar issues as I found two more expansion caps that had slid down - I also removed the two pipes that go through the bulkhead at the back ( nightmare to do ) but I dont think I got the put back in the wrong order
