had headgasket replaced on my 4.0 se, done about 700miles and i believe has gone again!
just after some suggestions on what to do, re-con engine (any ideas on how much this would set me back??)
or break the car and see if can get some of money back, has got 20" land rover wheels with good tyres (worth much??) twin scorpion exhaust (not worth much i doubt!) harmon kardon sound system and thats about it not really sure what else you take off when breaking.

anyways any input on a best route to take from here would be much appreciated

Someone has done something wrong then. Did they skim head. Did they even check it for flatness? If you have it done again and good advice for anyone, is to fit composite head gaskets.

Some years ago when I had my 3.9 SE, I had what I thought was a blown head gasket. When the heads were removed, there were no obvious signs of damage so I replaced them both. After about 200 miles, it went again and I had the heads tested by a local engine specialist...everything was fine. Fitted new gaskets again, after a few miles, it went again.
The "Web" was in it's early days at that time but I managed to read information from RPI in Norwich. I called them and they said it was due to a porous block which was a new one to me, it was unheard of and LR had kept it quiet (As they do). I was told the only fix was a new short engine which I bought.
Rebuilt everything, using my original heads etc. and the car ran without any problems for years until I sold it and was still running like a dream years later.
I have owned six cars powered by the V8 from a Rover P6 to the current 4.6 P38..with 3.5, 3.9 and 4.6 engine. In that time, I have only had problems, head gasket and overheating wise with the 3.9 and the 4.6...the 3.5's were no problem at all. In both cases, the 3.9 and 4.6 engines were replaced with new short units and that sorted the problem immediately. I have never had any problems whatsoever with the cylinder heads warping or cracking.
For what it's worth, my advice is that if you are having to replace the head gaskets on a "Weekly" basis, then the chances are that it is block related or radiator related. Another thing that I see on the forum is that a large number of overheating problems seem to be linked to LPG powered engines, I have never had a LPG car and apart from the block problems which were rectified...have not suffered from the problem.

Is there a link????
