A lot of the VIN decoders don't know about the VINs after 2009 by the looks of it.

If I was the owner I'd start with a quick call to Land Rover themselves first thing tomorrow and get them to check.

If these VIN decoders are coming back with 87 and they don't know about 2011 then it's quite possible the engine codes are unknown as well.

I could try and get an old contact to find out, I used to write the software that Land Rover use to populate Microcat so I've studied VINs a lot in the past, but probably worth just calling Land Rover
 
The landrover is 1997 (not 1999). It is on an R plate on the V5 (SALLDHM67VA136353), and everything on the V5 is correct for the reg no. All a bit worrying. If the worst happens, I wonder how I would stand in just offering them a bare chassis - no body, no wheels etc etc. After all I have legally bought the vehicle on the V5. Aaaaargh
 
from the photo's it's got a 300Tdi or TD5 front wing Hence the snorkel on the drivers side. An 85 Would be have the side vent on the Passenger side. As long as they haven't been added aftermarket that would make it 95 to 98 for a 300TDi or 98 to 2007. for a TD5.

Ah, didn't realise it's meant to be a 97. Definitely looks a suspect then. 2 VINs is not a good sign.

No you won't get the chance to strip it and give them the chassis. as far as plod DVLA will be concerned. the whole vehicle will be suspected as stolen. The best thing you can do is take it back to the seller and demand a full refund. Keeping it will probably lose you several thousands of pounds.

Only last week we had someone, Posting on here. Who had bought a 2nd hand fender, did all the checks HPI etc etc. spent a couple of grand on toys & modifications. Got bored and put it up for sale. Plod came round and seized it. as someone claimed it was stolen from them & they had recognised it. He's £6k out of pocket and is minus his landrover. :( Tis upto you whether you end up in the same situation.

So, to summarise;

The photos show a 300Tdi (I know things can be swapped around but rarely do people put old style reversing & fog lights on a later model i.e. TD5 ones are round)

The VIN on the V5 says it's a 1997 110. (Calvin)

The VIN on the chassis says it's a 85-87 110 petrol (Calvin) Although, interestingly, other on-line VIN checkers say the Chassis VIN number quoted is incorrect with an incorrect check digit.

We don't know what the VIN plate number is?

We don't know what the VIN on the pedal box is?

The latter 2 may well confirm to which vehicle type the body belongs.

Have you checked the VIN quoted by the tester yourself by looking at the chassis number? Did the tester read it right?

You didn't answer the question, as far as I can see, as to what type of suspension it has (leaf or coil)?

According to Clifton the Chassis number belongs to a 2.5 litre petrol station wagon, whereas the V5 number belongs to a 2.5 diesel station wagon. What engine does the OP have in his Land Rover?
 
The VIN plate no is the same as the no on the chassis. I do not know where the pedal box VIN is. There are no other numbers on the body or chassis (so far as I can see). I have double checked that the VIN on the chassis is correct as quoted by the MOT tester.It has coil springs and disc brakes. The engine is a 2.5 diesel. The reversing light and fog light are apparently on the wrong side . This no is on all windows:- DOT36AS2M12743R00981
 
I dont understand why you haven't taken it back to the garage you got it from. It clearly has some very serious issues. The longer you leave it the more chance you'll get nothing,
