Can anybody please recommend a decent set of shocks to cure the 'crashy' ride on my P38 . Currently feels like every small pot hole, bump etc in the road transmits a harsh shock right through the car. Its currently got britpart shocks on which maybe the problem (had them on when I bought the car) although they look fairly new. Car is fitted with standard 16" wheels. Reading other posts appears either Boge or Terrafirma would be best options to give a softer ride without breaking the bank? Anyone had either of these fitted and do they give a softer ride? I use the car on road never off roading, thanks
 
Think bogs were standard fit when I did mine I went for standard also check its not been polybushed every where I use them but only on the panhard bushes anywhere else ruins it and give a harsh ride
 
Shocks should not give an harsh ride. Standard Boge shocks are best. Make sure your suspension is set correctly.

The only polybushes I can see are on the front anti roll bar, not sure how much of a difference these would make alone.
 
I fitted the terra firmas'. It's quite solid on the road. If your after a softer ride, fit standards! The terras' aren't soft at all.

I found the Terra's to be OK onroad. But at twice the price of OEM (when I got them in 2012), I won't be buying a second set. Other than being shiny, there is nothing about them that justifies the price.
 
if the ride is rough then it can only be either the bushings or shockers. The ride is normally very good

I thought the price was ok?
four shocks for a normal car are more expensive in comparison, I found.. I didn't fancy the originals as I felt they were a bit soft for me.
our twisty roads had me feeling a bit sea sick, not to mention feeling unsafe:confused:..

I could've got a full set of OEM for half the price when I went down the Terra path. For sure the Terras give a better ride in terms of pressing on, but lets be honest, I shouldn't be hooning in a big ol' 4x4 anyway. My driving has become more sedate recently, so I'd take the wallowing comfort of the OEM dampers any day of the week.

I feel more unsafe when my tyre pressures are low, a small drop in the rears (they'd dropped to around 28PSI) had the sidewalls roll over and I ended up facing traffic. But that is probably a bigger issue with running 16" wheels.
 
I found Terrafirma terribly firm. Britpart were harsh and one of them snapped! Boge were a reasonable price and certainly the best. New air-springs can feel a bit harsh if Dunlop.

weird, I ended up the wrong way around, tyre pressures indeed on the land rover shocks at 40mph!!
that's the reason I opted for something a little more rigid..spooky. Ive taken to driving around 50mph on the open road.. Corner permitting of course...
 
I will add we ended up in a field.. Broken gearbox rad, bust sump and a whole load of unwanted turf in the body work...oh and a snapped middle exhaust silencer.. All Air bags and shocks replaced!!

I don't think I was even doing those speeds. I'd just entered a roundabout (A64, York) from standstill, so was maybe doing 20 or so. Luckily traffic was light that day, so the only thing damaged was my pride.

These things are very sensitive. Even a slight over inflation of the tyres makes a very noticeable difference in ride quality.
 
thanks for all the comments, will try a set of OEM shocks I think. What are the best tyre pressure to use on the 16" wheels. Handbook says 28 front and 38 rear. There is usually only me in the car, 38 on the rear tyres seems high to me considering the weight is mostly at the front?
 
bloody good question, try it according to the book. oem is as they were built, we find most problems are created when we go above and beyond the manufacturers original designs. but then we didn't get this far by not wanting more!!!;)

Hand book says 28 front 38 rear ALL LOAD conditions.
