OK,

So i expect a lot of us have seen issues with D2 TD5's

Well it appears it is now my turn...LOl

For the last few weeks I have noticed my normally very reliable on the tunr of a key starting D2 2003 MY Td5 has been intermittently getting hesistant to start. Sometimes on the turn of a key, sometimes a few cranks, and on 3 rare occasions having to do a purge cycle , then start with the foot flat down.

BUT, here is the kicker once running it is fine and it is completely inconsistent, going from first thing in the morning, to just stopped for fuel, plus straight after it will again revert to being on the button.

Have checked oil for the last few weeks and there is no sign of any diesel in it, not raising, no smell of diesel.

Also, over the last few days / week the pump which is normally nice and quiet has decided to whine on start up and also to a lesser extent when running.

I changed the fuel filter last week , for a coopers , made no difference.

Here is the real kicker, on the way yesterday down the motorway to work on the old mans D1 's clutch and also spend an hour or two looking at the filter housing and pump on the D2. I thought I had a flat as it started giving a bit of rough riding, declutched and the feel went away, but also the engine died. The old girl decided to stop good and proper. Tried restarting and no joy, pump whines but no go.

Had the RAC come and collect me, The RAC man asked if it would start to get it on the low loader, after a few goes at cranking it started and ran, on arrival att he services where I was going to change to another loader it started on the first turn and purred like a kitten. I decided in my optimism and also plain bl88dy minededness that I would drive it the remaining 15 miles.

Well surprise surprise, it proceeded to stop approx every 4 miles , needed leaving for 10 minutes and then would restart with cranking and a bootful of gas plus also engaging the purge cycle. A puff of smoke . and away we go. It felt like it was stopping due to fuel starvation, as at the lower speeds a misfire was noticeable just before dying.

Checked pump pressure at the FPR temp sender port , found 4 bar, but , and here is the interesting point is jumps up to 3.7 Bar and then is lazy going to 4 Bar.

Pulled the pump and it appears the bottom of the pump gauze filter section was not fully attached, in inspection I found some small pits of rubbish in the pump, but no slime and the filter was not blocked.

The filter head appears to be sound, however at least one of the brass connectors feels like it is not going to come off without a fight. The "white" air bleed valve appears to not let any air thru either way when tryng to blow through it in either direction. The orange ducks bill has a small gap on its front edge so is nor fully closed. So due to the air valve being questionable and not having another one to check against and the state of the brass connectors I have ordered an new one.

As of this morning, I have still got a whining pump, but it started after being sat for 15 hours on the turn of the key twice. When I get the filter housing I will see things improve.

Next stage is to fit the injector seals and washers I have If I see no improvement. And then look at pulling the FPR to see if the gauze filter there is slightly blocked.

Finally to wrap up this longwinded post. Nanocom shows no faults, except a crank speed alarm when the fuel temp sender is disconnected (EDIT: However when cold no error when temp sender is connected or disconnected) may be an aberration. Just trying to emulate again now.

Will also replace the CPS next week as well.

Cheers

So, with further info, I ran then engine until hot. disconnected the fuel temp sender made no difference, it appears it is an aberration.
However once i stopped the engine and tried to restart I find I have the following.

17,2 HIGH SPEED CRANK (CURRENT)

So next thing to try while it is in fault mode and not restarting , lets change the CPS. Now where is the l'ill blighter, off to read the rave. iirc somewhere near the starter???

Back in a while.

Cheers

The wifes Nissan X-trail had exactly those symptoms and issues and it was indeed the Crank Position Sensor. Strange but I didn't buy the 'proper' CPS, I bought another sensor, exactly same part number, for about 1/4 the price .. fitted, immediately worked properly, job's a good 'un. It might be worth, once you know the part number, having a google and seeing if the LR CPS part No matches a generic or standard 'other make/model' part number!

The actual fitting, being a Nissan, was a beeatch .. half the intake and exhaust system needed removing and even then it was a scratched arm, rapped knuckle, intense cramp inducing job ... but the wife was happy!!!

Crank sensor changed, still proving a problem starting, having said that I do not have the crank sensor fault code.

Ran until 70 degree coolant temp, stationary. when stopped and restarted it would not start, cranks lovely but no go.

Fuel pump is whining. Where as before it would have the above fault code now it does not.

So, I have to ask, Am I looking at having had two independent failures?, the fuel filter housing ( remember new housing is on order) has been ongoing for a few weeks, which is causing the pump whine. Plus a crank sensor failing, which caused the cutting out? when it was hot, which is now hopefully resolved.

Cheers

@Paul D

Thanks for the info, luckily on the D2 it is a 5 minute job.( See post above) , It may have solved the cutting out, but I still have the pump whine.

Cheers

Mine came with a new pump fitted it whines like a bugger because it's cheap but it works. May be just swop it out its a simple job n cheap

I would rather see if the filter housing and its valve components are causing the whine first, once that is fitted I will go from there. Having checked the pump over I do not see any reason why it should start whining by itself. If after fitting the filter housing it still has a whine I will look at either seeing if the pump has an issue internally or replacing. but that is next weeks chapter.

Cheers

if it's manual try to bump start it next time and if it starts right away that way replace the starter motor cos it has an internal issue influenced by heat which disturbes the crank signal if it's not that case the injector washers would be a good start

Just changing the fuel filter housing!

This is how it came off

Cheers

Yahoo,

New filter housing and filter including valves fitted , purged and now the whine has stopped.

Started on the button.

Going to let it run up to temp and take for a run before having a happy beer.

Cheers

Well in conclusion,

Ran it for 10 miles after fitting the new fuel filter housing and it ran without a murmur of complaint.
Drove the 90 home and got the train back so when I returned it was nice and cold, not even using the glows turned the key and the old girl started first time. Drove the 35 miles home with no complaint , and restarted ok, No faults showing on nanocom.

Hopefully all is good,.................Maybe I should not say something like that.:oops::oops:

Cheers

Well, that's gone and jinxed it! Glad to hear all is sorted for the moment.......

Mine did exactly the same thing, was randomly hard starting, leave it 5 mins might be ok, might not be ok to start straight away.

Going down the road in a gear like 3rd under heavy load, the engine would feel rough and then no response, put the clutch down, take load off, DEAD. Hard start until the battery goes flat then it would magically start.

Sometimes it would repurge itself whilst driving, but very rare, feels like fuel surging.

My resolution was to replace the copper injector seals, air was getting in when sitting for a while and then when I put her under load, the combustion gas was getting back in, killing the engine.

Glad to hear you've sorted it though. My pump does whine alot, but this seems quite common for alot of TD5 Discovery 2s anyway, lol (I have changed the pump too)
