Like some television have various sound levels for sports movies etc. Another one can be with the phone have settings to prevent volume to loud for ear buds ie Bluetooth might be acting the same way. How is the noise levels in the vehicle with radio off are you hearing engine or road tyres.

Its a 2011 free lander 2, so just before the last refresh.. Its not noisy in the car generally, a low mileage example, the sat nav cuts in at a good volume. But when you take calls its extremely low volume.

Could well be in the phone volume settings. I've noticed with my Nokia smartphone do drop volume connected to a paired headphones outside. Worth checking first when adjusting it.
