Hi All, my manual 2003 Disco II has developed a really bad rattle, I thought originally a grind but think its more of a rattle. Upon closer examination seems like it's coming from the handbrake drum. Handbrake is still working??? It's vibrating like mad. I tested it with the transfer box in neutral and selected first gear, asked my daughter to get in a rev the engine so I could try to see what's going on. Any pearls of wisdom welcome???
 
I could guess that there's something loose, but as I don't guess I'd remove the prop and the brake drum for a look-see :)
 
Just bought a prop removal tool, l'll have a look the first next dry day... Is there anything in particular I should be looking our for when I get in there? Spring or something?

Are you sure it's the hand brake vibrating?

Check all universal joints on the props, pull the fronts off while you're under there, not always easy to tell with it firmly on the ground so popping them off is an option as is chocking the wheels and jacking one wheel off the ground and rotating the prop, when was the last time you greased them?

Pop the H-brake drum off if all UJs are nice and tight, there really isn't much to them.

While you have props off the transfer box, check the play in the output bearings, they often become quite noisy before they fail completely but a sudden failure is not unknown.

If you haven't changed the transfer and gearbox oils in a while, now is an excellent time to do them.
 
I had i rattle on my d2 in that area . And it turn out to just be the bracket by the handbrake drum had come lose . Worth laying under and giving everything in the area a giggle . My sounded like a bolt in a tin can

mine rattles..

the test will be to gently lift the handbrake when its rattling, to the point where it *just* bites, ifg the rattling stops then its the shoe issues
 
So turned out to be multiple things. Hex bolt on handbrake drum was loose also bolts on the prop - shaft. All tightened and fine for about 10 miles. Then noticed whine from transmission - diagnosed as thrust bearing. Bit the bullet and just had clutch replaced - too big a job for me, £1000.00 (£420.00 labour, plus clutch kit, fly wheel, seals bolts, fluids etc.). I reported also a click noise (single click) from transfer box when driving. Driving very smoothly, albeit for this click. Folks at BLRC (Ballynahinch Land Rover Centre) said it was coming from the inside of the transfer box - they didn't seem to be to bothered about it - it's intermittent and happens randomly when driving - it's a click rather than a cluck or grinding noise - if that makes sense. Any ideas - hoping its's not the beginnings of another big bill! Can anyone put my mind at ease...

Hi had this on my auto disc 2 it was the brake shoes ratling on the bake plate, new shoes and springs sorted the problem

Thank you for this - Loose hex bolt and prop bolts. Now some noise from transfer box - replaced clutch and fly wheel so hoping the transfer box will hold up for a while..
