I wanna paint some parts under landy cos they look rubbish and a bit flakey is hammerite up to the job or should i been doing something else? wax oil??

Hey lammy do a search on here to find out more on the rustmaster bloke.

As for painting the underneath There was a test in Practical classics a bit back on this stuff. I put the results on here so try a search for that as well. I think Hammerites shutz stuff was best value for money.

hey

doing the same i only have slight surface corosion so giving whole chasis sand and paint i am doing good scrub with wire brush and sand paper 2 coates of red oxide and 2 coates of hamerite to finish this should keep the rust away

The thing is you're only sorting the bits you can get to. It's a good job Land Rover dint invent guttering or we'd have developed webbed feet by now.

The most important part to look after is the inside, has anyone came up with a good solution for protecting the inside?

I tek it you mean the inside of the chassis. I'm toying with the idea of drilling big holes at the lowest points on the cross members and side bits and a big hole on the tops so I can sluice water through to clean the ****e out then squirt waxoil into them.

Just had mine done by a local German guy. Top job as well. He used an endoscope to inspect the inside of the chassis first to check there were no major issues hiding and I'm happy to report that he reckons that it's got about 50% life remaining. He then injects rust proofing both inside and outside the chassis then waxoils both to finish. Looks good and he only charged about £350 for the lot. Given the labour involved in just preping the underside for a wax I reckon that it's a top deal.

I was gona do that but i went off the idea.

There's enuff holes in a Series chassis (the one's that are 'sposed to be there I mean) to get Waxoyl into pretty much all of it if you look for them. Found a couple of new ones t'other day unner the panel between the seats.

That little probe thing Waxoyl do works OK if the stuff is thinned a bit & warm when you use it.

I do sluice it down using the holes after I've been in the muddy stuff too. Amazing the **** that pours out!

I asked the good folk at hammerite for advice ysterday on painting my rusty axles and they advised AGAINST using any of the hammerite paints on the live axles as they can get too hot and the hammerite fails above 80 degrees.

nice getting a bit of honesty in the rustproofing world.

80 degrees Centigrade! - i wud be surprised if they got that hot. maybe the diff might get pretty warm - but it is in the air for cooling. I would be amazed if it got that hot unless something was seriously wrong with it.
