Hi y'all,

I took my newly acquired Series III out into the snow today and had real trouble getting it to move in reverse (4WD) up a slight incline.

I've had a good look around for this problem, but it's hard to google the noise it makes as there isn't really an Onomatopoeia for this kind of sound :)

It's a grinding/whining sound like grrooooowwwww when in reverse (4WD)

At first I thought it was wheel spin because of the snow, I opened the door to get a good look at the wheels and there is no spin, just a slipping sound and barely any movement. (Checked the side I can't see whilst driving and there was no spin marks or snow chucked up).

This did happen when in the mud a few weeks ago, but I definitely thought it was wheel spin (just assumed what with the hellova lot of mud around).

Back into 2 Wheel high range and everything seems fine but I didn't want to wear the clutch out. I can't remember trying low range but I think it was still doing the same noise.

This is the kind of sound you get when not quite engaging the drive mode correctly or not quite getting it in gear almost.

I'm not sure about freewheeling hubs as I've only had a Landy for a few months and still learning fast. Is there a way to check, because I assume this could contribute to the problem if they are not engaged... or is it lack of diff lock? I just dont know enough to diagnose it yet :)

Any help or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. If I find out any more I will be sure to share the details.
 
Leave the red knob alone and fully forward (Hi) then try just using the yellow knob.
ie Hi range 4wd.

do you get the noise?
 
Thanks for the reply. It still makes the noise and I want to say almost comes out of gear. I will try all combinations later on today and see if all drive modes still suffer this problem just to be 100% sure.

ps. Pretty sure I have freewheeling hubs. I wonder if this could contribute to the problem as something not engaging? Sounds more like transmission though.
 
to me it sounds as though there is a problem with revers gear in the gear box but its wierd why i wont do it all the time
 
I've tried it in all drive modes, with freewheeling hubs locked in 4WD position and still makes the noise. Almost pops out of gear! I think now it could definitely be a problem with reverse gear only.
 
if you put the transfer gear in neautral and then main box in reverse is it noisy then,
noise could be in the box worn reverse shaft or gear , but while still noisy would still give drive , it could be the reverse selector shaft pinch bolt come loose not engaging reverse properly
need to take cover off top main box off to check can do this from inside cab
