chop the feed or earth wire and solder (or crimp) in a spade connector.
2 min job and would give you the opportunity just to disconnect it prior to dunking.

Or, failing that, just don't worry about it!
 
i've got a thermo switch on the fan which i can just unplug the spade connectors or pull the fuse out.

I suppose worst case scenario is one of my passengers has to climb out the window onto the bonnet and throw someone a tow strap lol

wd40 and vaseline might come in handy aswell for the coil, my magnecor leads have a decent connection so should be ok with water around them.

I'm in Erdington not too far from Spagetti Junction.
 
The V8's aint as bad as you might think once you do a proper job of the waterproofing.

The killer is the dizzy, nobody ever thinks to silicone the holes underneath, then, seal the cap on and install a breather in the cap.

Smear inside leads both ends prior to refitting

Brush on and around coil and allow to dry.

Hey presto (apart from bog standard waterproofing of the other leccy bits) we have a V8 that'll wade all day.

The black Dakar I had was waterproofed to the point it'd run all day in water.

But, yes, we could always tow you out.

I can do that, just fitted my tubular winch bumper and a cheviot daisy cutter today :D. theres more tow points on the front of my fender than there is metal now. lol

Off to craddocks in the morning to get a split charge for the battery and then ill have a go at fitting the winch and the 2nd battery. :confused:

anyone wired a split charge before?

yes, I have, BUT, if it is a TDI have a look at the mount kit for a 2nd alternator.

Much better way of doing it. Think Gwyn Lewis does them.

If you fit a 2nd alternator then you stand a better chance of getting decent power to the winch.
 
I'll have a look later on at waterproofing it as much as I can, is it easy enough to silicon the holes under the dizzy? stupid question but can i seal them without taking it off?

also should I be worried about axle breathers?

Why not just put in a higher out put alternator. say a 130 amp or such. Woul be cheaper in the long run ,no brackets to get or longer belts, less to go wrong. :D
 
its a TD5. ive been told not to go with the expensive kits you can get as there just a waste of money. was pretty much gonna go with the parallel battery option so the alternator charges both batteries if need be.

Have heard about the X-eng one but was going to see what craddocks have. looked on line but there website is a nightmare.

In which case just dropping in a 2nd battery and wiring them up together is possibly better than a split charge kit, especially if you fit a chunky alternator.

However, personally Id scrap the idea and fit a proper all singing all dancing odyssey battery.

A winch will drain a standard full battery pretty quickly, the trick is to get a decent capacity allied to a decent output. Two naff batteries will never be as good as one really good one

no, you have to remove the dizzy to do it properly

Your axle breathers are above rocker cover height as standard anyway. With no snorkel there is zero chance of you heading that far in!

BUT, a check of them as fitted at the axle would be a good idea

In fact, as a reference, the axle breather standard height is to top of engine so no real worries unless going really deep

my only concern is water crossings, are we likely to come across any that are reasonably deep as I haven't got a cut out switch for the electric fan and no snorkel fitted at the moment :-(

Nothing deep enough to cause an issue, with the lack of rain recently I doubt it'll even bother your sills.
 
right then, no wimping out just for a bit of water lol, i'm in :)

i'll just bring a tarpaulin to put over the grill just in case and that'll help minimise the water going in, but like you say it probably won't be that deep and yes you can all say "Jase I thought you said it wasn't going to be deep" when we come up to some lol

Il trundle down M42 and then head off on A5.

Il stick the CB on channel 20. BUT, not had chance to sort the aerial out yet so I cannot guarantee it'll be working. Maybe sat Il sort if if I get time.

Ah ****, cb radio. i have one but when i bought the fender the guy said he ripped the ariel off a couple of weeks before. never got round to getting one. guess ill stick that on the list for craddocks in the morning too. channel 20 you say.

lol my cb is in its box so i'll get that fitted over the next couple of days :)

Speaking of cb aerials, does anyone know where i can get one from in brum or nearby ish? went to craddocks today and they dont have one. cant get one online as the bank stopped my card for fraud! :doh:

I might be able to borrow one for sunday but will need a permanent solution.

maplins they do a starter kit for £70 comes with everything you need in one box. Or you can get a midlands set up from them for around £85
