alright mate have you thought bout a discovery there not great on MPG on a good day i might get between 27-30 Mpg but apart from that there pretty good at everything else.

I'm a little wary of getting totally lynched- my knowledge of 4x4s is pretty limited.... but what are the thoughts on the 2.2 dTi frontera?

me old mans got a 04 dci sport(?).The clutch is made of jelly, cant tow for toffee, goes well on the motorway but interior is hideously plasticy. Not been tested offroad other than caravan sites.the 2.2 is reasonable on dezul
my dci..pulls my 12ft box trailer loaded to the hilt with dj equipment with ease..

I recomend a test drive of the Discovery before you buy any other car.
they are better on every level except MPG

HMMM, maybe you dont have the jelly clutch fitted?
Dont buy a fronterrra there shocking and the drivers seem to think theyre good even well they let em down/get stuck.
Why arent you looking at landrovers?

Wasn't looking at a Landy on the grounds of price and mpg, and everyone I have spoken to outside of this forum has told me to steer clear because of reliability/build quality issues.

or drive to a play and play and see what gets stuck and breaks down before making your choice?!

But I can cheat as it was released from the mod in 2002 but I can say all landrovers are good even one built in 1985 lol

Well... I went shopping today, and having had a good look round I have found myself a bargain X-Trail, which I'm picking up next week.

Yes we must- but I'd quite like not to break it in the first few weeks so I'll be taking it steady!
