So here's an interesting question. Have any of you ever had a fire randomly spew out from your handbrake? I mean, fire coming in the cab from under the rubber handbrake gaiter. I had this the other day and I'm still trying to find out how. The handbrake wasn't on, for sure, and I had only driven a mile before it ignited.
All I know is that now I have some charring and a completely dead handbrake cable. It still feels attached, it just does nothing when you pull the lever.
Does anyone have any ideas?

There is rarely a problem on a Defender that isn't an earth problem is there? It seems like a strange cable for the current to flow down but what you say makes sense!

Extra earths on a defender a good thing,a mates 110 started to burn because of this.I don,t know if Red Bull gives you wings but it put the fire out!

Land Rover Wolfs have, if done correctly, all electrical components earthed back to the battery. This was to reduce the risks of any sparks/static electricity from the bodywork when driving through gassy marshland or dry grasses. Quite a good idea I think, if a little more work

Farking hell i would **** meself if flames shot out the handbrake cover!!! Did it not torch you calf???

Why, if the main body to engine earth is poor, the handbrake cable goes from gearbox to erm... body, so would be the path of least resistance till somthing gives.

awesome!!! Throwing red bull on fire!! lol! Im surprised it didnt go up like petrol lol

I've always considered sticking a fire extinguisher in the Landy. I may buy one sooner rather than later. More so cause mines not an oil burner.

I've got one in the drivers footwell riveted to the seatbox. Haven't had to use it yet thankfully

blimey - there's little enough foot-room as it is..... mind you sounds as if this would have been handy for the OP incident...! A

Plenty for me, I've never found it to get in the way and I'd rather it was immediately to hand if I ever needed it. Couldn't put it on the passenger side as I've got an Anderson connector there, plus I usually chuck all my rubbish down there. I'll take a pic when I go outside

Plenty of space with this fitted uploadfromtaptalk1400853839813.jpguploadfromtaptalk1400853860229.jpg

That does make sense Tim, fair enough. I've already got 2 earths from the battery. Best I check their connection as clearly it isn't happy at the moment!
I used top quality evian as my fire extnguisher, after I got my mate to bail out and buy some!

I like how u actually took us a pic of your feet in there as well lol!! I need to get myself one as well!!
