So, after a few years absence I'm back!
Having retired the P38 for a few years on the drive, I had switched back to a Jag in 2017 with a £350 XJ8 4.0. Due to a long MoT list on suspension however last September, I sold this for parts for the same as I paid and reverted to the Daihatsu Sportrak 1.6ELXI for a few months.
The magnetism of the Range Rovers is strong however and in July I picked up a 2005 L322 TD6 Vogue SE... (some of us never learn!) This was a bit of a gamble as previous owner purchased via auction, so no history, but vehicle is clean and pretty much everything works.
No major issues as yet but there could be one coming - some strange gearbox behaviour that I feel could be early signs of problems, so I'm looking to do an oil and filter change. I have oil and a filter, but can't seem to find the correct filler plug online? (I am pretty tenacious usually and have spend a few hours searching) The current hex plug is quite badly rounded, so someone has had ago already and I feel I should have a replacement before I start. I slackened off the drain plug a little and captured a couple of drops of oil an a clean cloth and this has a nice red colour, so not too urgent but I feel the earlier I catch, the longer I can postpone a rebuild.
No faults show yet and shifting up is fine if a little 'late', but when going down hill with no throttle, the engine revs intermittently drop back to idle and then pick back up as if slipping out of gear. I'm guessing this is either torque converter not locking up or coast clutch failing (assuming these boxes work this way). MPG isn't great at about 19.8mpg but most use is local roads 20-60mpg on a 13 mile daily commute, so about what I expected. It's way better than the 4.6L P38 and not much less than the XJ8. It has dropped from around 26mpg over the last couple of months, but I've not done any long distance. (Probably will tomorrow)
