Im going to change the glow plugs in the wifes 2005 TD4 at the weekend.
Now that the weathers dropped below freezing its still starting fine but now started chucking a puff of smoke out that smells like unburnt fuel on start up with a very slight lumpy idle for about 5 or 10 seconds so I think its got a knackered glow plug.

Just wondering if theres any recommended make that people favour for the TD4 before I go and order a set?

I've just replaced mine (2003 TD4), I went for Bearmach at £13 the set of 4 delivered. Time will tell if they last, but I've had no issues with Bearmach in the past.

I've the same issue as you for a while, and sadly changing the plugs didn't sort it. But mines got 120k miles on it, so I think the injectors are a little past their best - but I'm not chucking new injector money at it, I can put up with a little smoke, and after about 10 seconds it runs very sweetly anyway.

Yeah thats the same here, smoke for only a few seconds though with the slightest bit of lumpy idle but it didnt start doing it until last Thursday when the temp started falling below zero so im hoping its a glow plug rather than an injector.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen anyone fix a problem by changing the glow plugs - it always seems to be something else.

A few horror stories when they snap though trying to change them.

Hoping its not something else in this case! I had the same symptoms on my Jeep last winter and had one duff glow plug so hoping this is the same.

Mine starts with a slight misfire and some smoke. I have 1 dead plug that I can't get out. All the others are Bearmach and work fine.

Fitted AC Delco in mine couple of weeks ago, cured my slow starting and smoke on start up.
Don't know if they are any good long term but do the job for now.

Must be that time, just ordered a set myself. Plan on changing them at the weekend.

Turned over for quite a while yesterday before starting. It was -7 though

Having read some accounts of cheap plugs deforming / expanding and getting stuck I decided to go with a decent make so ordered a set of NGK plugs. Fingers crossed that the old ones come out ok now!

Warm engine. DON’T put any force on them greater than one hand on the ratchet or they’ll break. Plenty of lube. Turn them back and forth gradually.

Im just hoping they werent put in by the same gorilla that tightened down the oil filter cover. I had to use a 2 foot breaker bar to get that undone!
