races as part of worm needs new shaft ,outer races can be changed ,you can get a shaft and nut kit for series 3s if needed, every thing is set so theres no free play and slight preload easy enough by feel

Spent this weekend removing various brackets and other random bits including the oil filter. Then I got to thinking: what does this switch connect to? Is it an oil light on the dash or an oil pressure gauge?

I just pulled mine off. It has an internal spring clip which then pinged across the garage and took hours to find! Mine had a small fracture within the plastic which may have made it easier but even after removal I can't see any other way to get it off.

Next question: I have acquired an oil pressure gauge and it appears to have a thin pipe running out the back. Where would this go to if I wanted to install it???

The thin pipe would be for oil. You would need to run that to a T piece where the oil light switch currently is on the filter housing.

Further picture updates.
It took me a while last weekend to locate the oil filter under all that gunk.
However, they were the simplest pair of bolts to remove.
And eventually the oil filter came away.
I then tried to take the smaller alternator bracket off but realised that I can't until that other bit comes off.
What do you call that front drive thingy that comes out of the front of the engine?
Had to stop so moved onto the big bracket that supported the steering box.
Came off eventually and is now rubbed down ready for a coat of red oxide.
Then removed that other brackety bit.....
It's a good job I take the pictures, I'd never remember where all these bits go later on!

The front drive thingy out the front of the engine is the front crank pulley and starter dog (for starting handle if you have one - handle slots through hole in front bumper and engages there)

I've just looked back to my original post. My old girl isn't a 78 but an 83. I was just making things up! She became a civilian in 2003 after her 20 year National Service.

Happy to help.
That makes sense re the age....your engine block is terracotta colour which means you have the stronger 5 main bearing engine which was introduced from about July 1980 onwards.
Beware though, I've found some parts for the post 1980 models costly.....stub axles £230 a throw for example!

I'm reaching crunch point. As you can gather by my last few posts I'm faffing about and delaying the next big move. I've got most of the peripheral engine bits off but it seems as if my next job is taking the block out. Is there a right way to do it? What will I need? Can I get away with not opening it up or is it worth it whilst I've got it out? I'm really in new territory now......................................
