hi all
im still having problems with my series 3. i can get it to stutter and it spins nice but it just wont run. the engine is firing because the exhaust is getting warm. all the glow plugs work and the engine is getting everything it should at the right time. we have tried everything, including trying to jump start it on a very steep road but it just wont run. if anyone could help it would be very useful otherwise im going to have to buy a new engine:(

thanks

OBVIOUSLY the engine is NOT getting everything it should at the right time. If it was, it would be running like a sweetie!

Question:

Is it trailing heaps of white smoke from the exhaust as you run it down the steep hill?

That's a YES or a NO answer ....

If the answer is YES, then loadsa fuel, but not enough compression or glow to light it up, OR the injection timing is WAY off ... investigate.

If the answer is NO, then there's none or hardly any fuel being injected.

"Ahhh .." you say, "I know the fuel is getting through 'cos the exhaust warms up" (Smug Smile here)

"Well" says me and Ratty, "we think the exhaust will be BOUND to warm up even if NO FUEL reaches the injectors because COMPRESSION heats the air very hot, and smartly stuffs it into the exhaust, even with NO fuel being used."

So my best bet is FUEL ... lack of at the injectors.

Slacken each injector pipe by THREE FLATS, (half a turn - no more) and turn the engine over. Unless and until each slack pipe "spits" a wee spot of fuel regularly as the engine turns, it isn't going to go. Tighten the nuts again, but not too tight or you'll bust the pipe ends.

TOP CLASS LIFT PUMP!

CLEAN FUEL FILTERS!

BLEED BLEED BLEED! You MUST see air-free fuel skooshing out the bleed-screws on the injection pump. If there is air in the guts of the IP, the engine WILL NOT START. .

She'll go alright when you find what I am sure will prove to be a simple standard "diesel doesn't start" syndrome..

Do let us know!

hi thanks for the advise
i did a compression test the other day and found out that it had really low compression so i have taken it apart and taken one of the pistons out and the piston rings are shot so im going to change them. which will then mean i have rebuilt the engine because i have already changed the fuel system including the injector pump as it was not squirting any fuel what so ever and yes it is timed propally. so im just going to put the engine back together and then it has no reason not to go.

Hi,

So what happened after the new rings were fitted?

Did she fire up nicely?
