So yesterday the mechanic did a pre mot. New brake pipes needed front and back. A track rod end new brake pads needed. Tyre and tow bar plate. He drove it and believes the 4 wd is fine as can't hear anything wrong. I've asked the dealer to get that garage to do the work and the mot and he has agreed. He's also in the process of fixing the 2 windows and the rear wiper.

And so all seems well.

Any recommendations on tyres?

He must be some kind of miracle man mechanic to be able to diagnose the 4WD from a quick test drive. Not saying there is anything wrong with it but at this point you still don't know. I've bought 5 Freelanders in the last couple of years, all over 100k miles and all of them needed the VCU sorting. I'd factor in the price of doing this if you buy any Freelander with this kind of mileage. It also sounds like you need a new boot door window regulator so allow another £40 ish for that.
Other than these things it sounds like a good enough car so long as you remember it's a Landy so bits will fall off. :p

I'm just imagining different possibilities and I think that what I'd like is something that will grip the road well if I ever come around a corner and have to do an emergency stop with a loaded trailer. Hopefully the tyres will match the really good brakes that are on it. Secondary by a distance is what they woukd be like on mud as that is unlikely. Long lasting and reasonably priced would be nice.

If that's what you want, and get 30K miles out of a set. You'll find it hard to better the Yokohama Geolander AT GO15. In the standard 215/65/16, the Geolander AT are about the best you can buy for the money The wet grip is better than most other AT tyres and they go places where you wouldn't think possible. They are more expensive than budget tyres but they last longer too. If I ran 16" rims, they are my first choice. https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/yokohama/geolandar-a-t-g015/215-65-r16-98h-564839

I'd like to thank you all for your advice, concerns, warnings and encouragements. I have now indeed bought the freelander after it having had the work done on it. Still one or two teething problems. I have fitted 4 new tyres and think that perhaps you'd like me to start a new thread?

All the ones I buy end up being projects that go on for weeks before I even get it on the road. Not sure if that is bad buying by me or normal for older Freelanders but happens every time.

Good luck. Hope it turns out to be a good one.
