He must be some kind of miracle man mechanic to be able to diagnose the 4WD from a quick test drive. Not saying there is anything wrong with it but at this point you still don't know. I've bought 5 Freelanders in the last couple of years, all over 100k miles and all of them needed the VCU sorting. I'd factor in the price of doing this if you buy any Freelander with this kind of mileage. It also sounds like you need a new boot door window regulator so allow another £40 ish for that.So yesterday the mechanic did a pre mot. New brake pipes needed front and back. A track rod end new brake pads needed. Tyre and tow bar plate. He drove it and believes the 4 wd is fine as can't hear anything wrong. I've asked the dealer to get that garage to do the work and the mot and he has agreed. He's also in the process of fixing the 2 windows and the rear wiper.
And so all seems well.
Any recommendations on tyres?

Other than these things it sounds like a good enough car so long as you remember it's a Landy so bits will fall off.
