I am not really the type of guy to panick and it honestly drives very well and quietly. If I seem eager then it could be that I'm new to the forum and keen to talk. I will be needing something within 6 weeks though. I'm no mechanic and spending lots of time looking at cars vs spending lots of time working to help pay for fixing a car.....if it goes wrong...... Hope you understand my point although probably not a good one.
If it drives well now then after being sorted with mot and new tyres all around it should drive even better?
I believe they mentioned a warranty on engine gearbox drivetrain etc.
However I don't trust anyone who sells me a car.... That's why I'm on here!

No. The sellers have a forecourt with about 30 4x4s on it and has been there about 10 years I suspect they will have done those checks when taking it as a trade in. Does this constitute a garage?

if i'm being totally honest i wouldn't trust any garage , if they are selling vehicles it would be classed as a garage in my eyes ,

would u name the garage as there's some reviews that can sometimes be found online,

always best to do a full hpi check urself , if u know the reg number is easy to also use the free mot history checker online, at least then it will give u an indication of its past history , how many times it may have failed

can concure in what the other guys have said, just trying to prevent where possible people getting ripped off

I didn't realise I had lost some air in one of my rear tyres. Car felt a bit strange but nothing to alarming, plus we had people visiting for a couple of days and wanted to do some sight seeing before I looked at it.

Long story short, in 2 days and about 400 miles - it totalled my IRD. Looking at the tyre which I believe was causing the problems, it was bald as - it wasn't 2 days earlier!

So please do proceed with caution. If you do need a recon IRD & VCU, by the time it is fitted, you won't have to much change from the £2K that MHM describes - maybe £1,500 might be nearer the mark - but what ever, its considerable. However, you would know you've got a great car to haul that trailer on and off road.

Its very difficult to know the real history of any car. Even if it has a full LR service history, it doesn't tell you everything. A perfectly good looking car might have had a dodgy tyre put on it at some point in the past and the IRD is just waiting to go bang. I'm sure other cars have similar known (costly) problem areas as well.

Good luck. I'd be tempted to point out the dangers in this car and offer the bloke a grand - knowing it'll probably cost you £2,500 - but you'll have a work truck that should be reliable and last for a good number of years.

Your honest opinion is what I want to hear m8 and I thank you for it. The years of experience that you lot have are most valuable. Common sense may well prevail. Problem with common sense is that it's not that common!.
I reserve the right to possibly make an arse of myself and take a punt on a 14 year old car that May or may not be good.
Even a car with full history could be dodgy at 14 years old.
If i do buy it I grant you all the right to say I told you so and call me a fool.

However that time has not yet come

John

P.s. Thanks for showing the check on mot of a 55 plate freelander. I will get the reg on the one I have paid a deposit on today. And post it it's blue and a 53 plate

No probs. At least you are going into it with your eyes open.
I think you will find that is the mot history of the car you are looking at ;)

As an experienced idiot I didn't take a note of the reg lol but will get it today. I'm pretty sure they know that there's something that they will fix causing the rattle mentioned in post 1 . I would quite like to hear opinions on my initial post re reversing on full lock and feeling light resistance. Oh and the handbrake needs adjusting but mot will pick up on that

John

You have had opinions on that... all the discussions regarding the VCU and drive train!

lol, Quality :)

I'm hoping you get it now, and hoping its a good 'un :) Good chance it won't be, but that being the case, I'm sure you'll put up a great project thread.

Seriously though, if you go for it - do try and get some serious wedge knocked off the price. It would be a reasonable price for a possibly dodgy Freelander over here, but a bit steep in UK by the sounds of it.... and definitely don't drive it with props attached unless the tyres are all matching make/model and pumped to same pressure. You may get away with getting it home or to the tyre shop, but it will bite you on the bum sooner rather than later.
