Hi all!

im having a little trouble with my disco 300tdi r380 gearbox. It wont go into fifth gear, its like there is something blocking it? Also shift down from fourth to third sometimes goes and sometimes dosent. Its fine when changing from second to third and there is no unusual noises when in gear. I have changed the gear box oil with landrover mtf supplied by my local landrover supplier (adventure 4x4) all other gear changes are really smooth (well as smooth as it can get with a disco gearbox haha). I'm at a loss as I have no experience with mechanics/gearboxes.

Any one around Harrogate/leeds fancy taking a look? copius amounts of cake and tea can be supplied! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is the gear stick held in 3rd 4th alignment ,is stick blocked from 5th when engines running or not

The gearstick sits central, if that's what you mean by 3rd 4th alignment. It seams to go into all gears without a fuss with the engine not running.

alignment in that if you push lever forward without any side ways movement it goes easily into 3rd,so with engine off 5th feels fine ?

no sideways movement if you push the leaver forward- (i'll go and recheck this though).
5th feels fine with engine off- feels like it goes is and stays in gear.

jack a wheel up and see if it is in gear ,but if it goes in with engine off it would suggest baulk ring

what the chuff is a baulk ring when its at home and is this a DIY job for a novice?- Hoping its not a major gearbox out job- fingers crossed!!

its a bronze alloy ring that acts as a brake between synchro hub and gear ,not a standard diy job does need box stripping to fix , it could be something totally different but i can only go on your descriptions
