Changed clutch on 2004 TD4 but now the car only drives in 5th and reverse gears. 1234 can be selected ok but when I let the clutch out no drive to the wheels? When I select 5th or reverse and let clutch out the wheels turn fine which makes me think the clutch is ok ?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I've got an auto box, but just wondering if the selector has been reinstalled correctly , just in case it's slightly out of line so not engaging the gears correctly

have u downloaded the rave workshop manual

sorry can't be of any further help but just sounds like the selector arm, linkage isnt in the right position????

If you didnt open the box or anything else silly like that then the selector linkages would seem to be a likely candidate as Gary said.

it's the only thing I can think off, with them not reinstalled correctly ??

van , plse let us know how u get on

Thanks for the replies.
Think selector linkages are ok as the car does actually go in to all the gears just no drive to wheels except 5th and reverse.
I can put the car into 1st2nd3rd4th gears with the engine running and not depressing the clutch pedal.
Spoke to guy at local SHB 4x4 garage who is 99% sure there is a busted shaft in gearbox.
Recovery guy started the car in gear to drive into my drive then stalled it to stop, may have caused the problem.

how do you know it goes into gear ??
are you using the regular gear lever or selecting directly at the box ??
need an expert to chime in and say if there is 1 shaft that could cause this problem .................. seems odd anyway
does it make funny noises in 1, 2, 3 or 4 ?

Too bloody right !

Dead thread resurrection !!

I have exactly the problem specified by the OP in this thread in that having had a recent clutch change my Freelander now will only drive in 5th and reverse. Was there a solution to this? I've replaced the entire selector mechanism to no avail and now I'm suspecting the box itself.

Another member said this.
I know that when my clutch was done I had a similar problem and that was that the lug had been snapped off the selector fork inside the box. it seamed to go in to gear but just no drive 5th and reverse was ok as it used a different part of the selector.

Yeah, I read the whole thread but the OP didn't come back and update. Hoping he might have found something when changing the box, or just confirming that there was internal damage before I go to all the trouble of replacing mine.

There was indeed a lug broken of selector shaft inside gearbox which gave the feeling of gears being selected but weren't.
Replaced gearbox and all was sorted.

Thanks for confirming the other posters findings.
So if the box stops working after a clutch change. It sounds like the selector has got damaged in the process.

It's a strange one. Wonder how it happens? There's no need to open up the gearbox when removing it for a clutch change.

Excessive pressure on the linkage I would guess. If the linkage is moved into a position where the forks are under stress, they can break.

I suppose that's why the Rave CD section on gearbox removal says to remove the selector before taking the gearbox out. There's no explicit warning about it though. Most of the ones I've seen for sale on eBay still have the selector attached. I'd have to get one shipped to Shetland and my worry is that it may be broken during shipping.

OK, so I have the replacement gearbox and mine is ready to come out but I can't separate the box from the engine. I have checked, checked and checked again that I have removed all the bolts and I'm 100% sure it's not a missed bolt that's holding it in.

Anybody have any top tips on how to separate the box from the engine? On most gearboxes I've changed they come apart fairly easily but I've been struggling with this for hours.

For info I haven't removed the IRD as specified in the Rave manual but I've seen it mentioned on a few forums and one Youtube video that you don't need to remove it to get the box out.
