The friends back from holiday and taken her for a drive. He's with you BB, it's the break drum that causing the problem. Holly and BH have a date with him on Sunday to have a lesson on how to take it off and fix it. The PTO is working and in order ( I got a crash course :) ) just the rod and belts missing :) the wood wedge is to stop the lever slipping into action. :D

Ok I'm bringing this back up to the top as we are still having problems here ( and if someone else has searched this problem) so, so far we have

Checked all the above. Opened the drum up and found it clean, however we have changed the shoes even though the old ones weren't too bad. New springs ( which looked different to the ones we took off, but assure they were the right ones)
Degreased and lubricated the expander unit, which is working
Adjusted the break like been shown.
But the drum is still getting hot. If we slacken the hand break off so it's not working at all, it doesn't get hot when driven. So in our mind something is catching. I've thrown it in there that the drum itself may be slightly misshapen? But we can't see this or if there is any marks or damage, say if someone in the past has been off road and hit it. Looks U damaged.

Anyone have anything else we could look at? Could the hand break itself have a problem to look at?

Cheers

It takes quite a large amount of movement of the lever through the linkages to go from fully off to fully on. Maybe wear in the links not giving enough movement of the expander?

The heat has to be either friction or transmitted heat.
Have you checked oil levels? - its a long shot :(.
My guess ( and it is a guess) is that it is still handbrake.
Have you checked the operating mechanism and fully lubed it?

Are the springs in correctly and is it fully releasing?

Try turning the drum by hand and see if it is sticking

This ^^^ might be the best way to give a full picture.

Prop off, transfer box in neutral and you'll be able to turn the drum and operate the handbrake.

Bear in mind that getting a good brake that fully releases is often a bit tricky and a frequent game at mot time. My 109 was always borderline pass/fail so got pinched up a click or two for the mot and backed off after.

I'm sure it was play in the links that was the issue.

Never trusted handbrakes alone anyway, always leave it in gear when parked.
