hi i had a problem with the m/s warning lights, they came on this morning for about a mile and when i got home it reset its self .thinking about it i reversed into a kerb ,not very hard though ,would that knock the gearbox control switch out. also before it set its self right it seemed to rock the car when i put it in reverse, it seems fine now . thanks for any advice arv

m/s lights could be due to a couple of things;

xyz switch stuffed (due to air con draining right onto it)

battery voltage too low
 
Guarantee it's the XYZ switch.

It's fitted in the most stupid place, under the air con drainage.

After a while it gets all gunked up.

My local diesel garage charged me £20 labour and parts at £120.

Not a single problem since.

Make sure they move the drainage pipe slightly and grease up the switch.
 
hi thanks for your responces i had a new xyz switch fitted by craddocks of cannock 12 months ago i just hope its a minor blip arv
 
I have just fixed my flashing lights by separating the terminal block connector adjacent the XYZ switch. Had some minor green deposits on it where water from aircon hose drips over this connector and the switch (terrible design!) causing corrosion. Sprayed with WD40 and re-asembled and all sorted. Now just need some shrink wrap to seal t up and to lengthen the AC drain hose.
 
you realy need to have it pluged in or you could be spending money in the wrong place but starting with loose conectors sounds a good place to start

I had a new switch fitted just 4 months ago and mine is also playing up. I think it is due to the air con drain and the amount of water that is on the roads these days after all the snow. Well, I hope that the case but I am going to put heatshrink sleeving on it anyway.
 
Just brought a 2003 Disco 2 Auto in really good nick but once I got it home found the diff lock doesn't engage in High or Low - any ideas?

Hi - i'm new to the forum and have just been searching for info on what might cause a recurrence of this problem - I have also recently had the switch replaced.

Were you able to get this resolved?

Thats because you most likely have not got one!...........

Ignore the sticker on the console, Has your transfer lever "nob" got Difflock embosed on it ? If not then you have High / Low only.

Are you SURE that your vehicle has a centre difflock (CDL) fitted? After 2001 LR stopped fitting them until about 2003 when they became a customer option I believe.

Don't know what the weather is like with you, but over here it is REALLY cold. I mention this as it can have a negative effect on your car battery performance.

I'm not talking about the ability to start the engine, I'm talking about after the battery has been sucked by the starter motor it might not have enough juice to provide the gearbox ECU with reliable supplies.

My advice would be, in this cold weather, start your car, leave the engine running for just 10-15secs before selecting any gears as that should have giving the alternator time to start pumping juice back into the battery.

Good advice. The only time I've had this M+S problem has been when I've selected gear a little bit too fast after starting up. But then I don't have aircon:)
