Just watched your video, have you ascertained where the noise is the loudest ie engine end of gearbox, middle of gearbox or in the transfer box? My thinking is,if it was the transfer box then you would get the noise when you select reverse as well as in D. It's the grinding in park that points to main gearbox and or t/c.:(

Something must be still spinning. Either one of the transfer box sprockets has lost all it's teeth or the output shaft has snapped i would think. In that case box could be turning as it has nothing to hold it.

and crunching the park pawl. Well if it was mine it would whip off the transfer box and see if the main box is ok. :)

If the output shaft has snapped the main box won't be OK. In that case the mainshaft will be being dragged around by oil presence. Causing the grating into park.
 
So, what do we say, replace the lot? Drop the oil out of the boxes, if there is any, and see what falls out.:)

Think i would be going for output shaft snapped if i was a betting man. Only thing to do is strip it and find out. :D
 
id go for t/box .g/box must be working if it crunches going into p

Maybe James, but if the transfer sprocket is toothless you would still expect it to stop output shaft from spinning so that park can be engaged. Maybe the chain has snapped jammed the transfer box and sheared the output shaft. It gets worserer and worserer. :D:D

if theres broken drive in t/box it wont stop gear box turning:)
 
Thanks for the adivice guys. It was definately coming from the t/box as the noise faded the closer I got to the main gearbox and engine. Keith, I think your right, found fresh oil on the casing and as the previous owner was a complete muppet when it came basic maintainence (the current one also for not thinking to ask about it) I would say it's been leaking for a while and run dry.

Now for a few questions:

1 - Is this something that can be changed on a drive?
2 - Seeing as it's possibly run dry, will it be salvagable or would a replacement be a more viable option?
3 - Who like bacon buties, tea/coffee and beer tokens :biggrin1:
