I would like to change the gearbox oil and filter soon as I do a lot of towing ant the car is relatively new to me. I see there are sump conversions from a one piece filter sump to a separate sump pan and filter cartridge. What is the idea behind these?
Also is it wise to disconnect the oil cooler and briefly run the engine to pump the torque converter out or just indoors the drain plug in the sump?

Just do an ordinary oil change Dont disconnect and try and drain torque converter, you are best to do three oil changes over several thousand miles to achieve a full change.

The main reason I ask is that method was recommended on my shogun and when done, it made a considerable difference where as just draining the sump made little change to colour or the way it drove.

There were five different transmissions used in the L322 and you don’t state which model you have. From your question, I’ll guess that you have the ZF 6HP26 transmission?

This transmission was also used by Land Rover in the Disco 3 & RRS which have a large crossmember under the transmission sump. This prevents the single-piece transmission sump/filter from being replaced without disconnecting one of the engine mounts first and jacking the engine up to provide sufficient clearance. It is, however, possible to drop the sump down onto the crossmember and then hacksaw through the exposed plastic suction pipe, allowing the two separate pieces to be removed without jacking the engine up. The single-piece sump/filter can then be replaced with a separate filter and metal pan (used by BMW) which can be manoeuvred into position, again, without releasing the engine mount & jacking up the engine.

With the L322, the crossmember does not exist. Therefore, there is no reason to use the separate metal pan and filter. You can if you want, but there’s really no point. Just make sure that you use a genuine IBS Filtran part.
