Im ready for gear oil change, with lucas trans fix in, and swapping the voltage regulator. Just have a question about this piece?? is that circular thingy just a protective cap? i Took it off, (had 2) 1 were hollow (which was loose in the package) and the other one seemed to hold the 2 bronze/copper contacts retained in.

i did some tests today, and it seems like my earth cable is indeed OK, no voltage drops :confused: Guess its just my fusy boxs, which i ain't getting before next year... duh :rolleyes:

Any tips and tricks about changing the regulator or is it just straight forward, take off the minus cable on the battery, and then just take out the old regulator, and in with the new? No need for any torque specs or shait? just mount it like it is mounted as before...
It's only a retainer for the brushes (bronze/copper contacts) very straight forward to change and no shait needed.;):D
 
I remember the extra plastic bit when I did mine but for the life of me I can't remember what it was for...maybe it's useful for pushing the old brushes back to aid removal? I only did the job 4 or 5 mths ago as well but I've the memory of a goldfish:rolleyes:
Again, poor memory, but I think the small bolts were something like 6/7/8mm, think there were 2 different size bolt heads to contend with?
Regardless, it's very easy to do and I never removed anything else to gain access to the rear of the alternator but I did use a small inspection mirror to help with the bolt locations. Remove the plastic cap on the new brush pack once it's installed and not before.
 
Are you removing the sump of the gearbox and changing the filter too?
If you are then once the bottom plastic heat shield thing is off(they are just 1/4 turn fasteners) remove the 10mm head bolt on the vertical silver heatshied at the rearmost end on the passenger side(rhd) and it will allow the heatshied to be moved out of the way greatly improving access to the sump bolts.
The britpart filter kit did not have the correct size washer for the fill plug, drain one was ok, so I had to reuse my fill one. This fill washer on mine had a ridge where the full plug flange had crushed it, or it was made like that, dunno, but if you do have to reuse it, make sure the ridge is under the fill plug flange as removed and not against the sump as I guess it would leak if you did that.

my plan is to remove the sump and change filter yes. I dont have the plastic shield thing i think. are you talking about a exhaust shield or an actually plastic guard for the sump, as the engine? since i dont have the plastic sheet for the engine either.
Is it advised to use some blue medium threadlock on drain/fill plugs? Didn't do it on my diffs.

Theres 2 o rings aswell? i have one big and one smaller (for the filter i assume.)

Regulator is a simple off /on operation. The plastic brush retainer is worth keeping, put it on your old regulator.
If you sump kit is Britpart, quite likely the sump gasket will not fit.

i have some engine gaskets from britpart. their on a piece of cardboard with blue britpart print all over it. I assume the one i have is not britpart then as its just plain cardboard. Bought the kit from british parts.
Got the car inside a garage now, so i can hopefully tackle it dry.

Yes, black plastic try under the gearbox sump, that attaches to the silver foil covered vertical heat shields.
Yes, 2 O rings. Again...poor memory..but one of the O rings, think it was the larger one, I couldn't initially see where it went as I couldn't see one on the old filter but it's there hidden by old oil. I think it went on the valve block side opposite the plastic pick up tube(which you have to remove off the old filter and refit to the new filter).
Did you get a new sump gasket? You should of. Take that out the box and lay it on a flat surface a couple of days before you do the job, mine came folded up and would have made the job more tricky. No sealent on the threads. Don't forget to torque up the valve block bolts before you fit the new filter.

You could always make a gasket out of the backing cardboard.:D:D;)

My britpart sump gasket was slightly wrong, there are little cutouts that give some clearance for the bolt flange or washer, I forget, that weren't quite right but didn't affect the sealing luckily.
The old one was perfect and very pliable so I could have reused it if the BP one was utterly sh!te.

The sump gasket is a moulded plastic affair that came rolled up with the Britpart kit. I reused the old gasket.

Gasket does have the shape of the sump, so hopefully fits. Should atleast.
yep my sump gasket were folded 3 times (both ends)
Looks flat now, as i crushed it under a 20ton press.

Mine had the shape of the sump, just 5mm too short on the long sides:rolleyes:

I think i will fill the gearbox all the way up from the fill plug until it oozes out, then close it off, and just fill the rest from the dipstick.. Im atleast putting my lucas inside the sump before fitting it back.
I can't bother going under the car while its on. Not tomorrow. I would probably just make a huge mess anyway :D

If my gasket is 5mm to short, i will be mad. If its leaking, i will also be mad :mad:

Checking gear fluid amount= Cold car, running, cycled trough all the gears, then meassure.

How in earth am i supposed to do the volt regulator?? The power steering hose is in the way! I started with the 2 nuts on the contacts, aint no regulator loose. Then i gi ahead take of plastic cover nuts and find 1s blocked by the power steering hose…. Whaaat??
