Hello, I have a 1990 RRC, with the LT77 gearbox, and the other afternoon while travelling home, I went to pull away in 1st gear at a zebra crossing and lost all drive. The clutch pedal is operating ok with no fluid lost, but when you let up the clutch pedal theres a grinding noise and it goes nowhere, even in low range.
When I switch off the engine and put it in gear, it freewheels. Is it the clutch or the gearbox gone bang?
Thanks in advance

It could be a number of things. Something simple like the grub screw coming out (or lose) on the selector shaft (had that happen, in my case I lost reverse, took 30 mins to fix), through to the clutch disk failing and breaking away from the centre, to a collapsed bearing in the box preventing you engaging gear (although you would have had plenty of bearing whine before this happens). Not much help I know.

If you can't find something simple like the selectors, then drain the GB oil and see if it is full of shiny material or nice and clean. If the former, you have a box issue, if the latter, you might have another issue.

Was going to suggest checking transfer box engagement bit I now see you've already tried that.

Centre of the clutch plate ripped apart, or the main shaft has stripped it splines..

Happened to me in France many years ago,the springs fell out of the centre of the drive plate, great pedal but no drive. Not much noise though the springs jammed in the pressure plate bit of jangling.from memory.

Thanks for that as it sounds the ame as what has happened to mine.
Will know for sure at the end of the week when the engine comes out.

You dont say which transfer box you have. If its a BW could be chain problem, for LT230 could be broken halfshaft or diff etc.

I'm assuming it'll have the LT230 as it had the LT77 and not the R380.

Personally I would drop the gearbox
Im replacing the engine anyway, going to put a tdi in as when I bought it, was fitted with vmengine that had 2 cracked heads, so I fitted a mitsubishi into it and not happy with it, so going down the tdi route. Not sure of what the transferbox is but Ive not changed the gearbox so believe its the original Lt77

LT 77 Is that the gearbox ,transfer box that strips input or output splines due to lack of oil holes in the center gear cluster and rusts inside:eek::eek:

If you push lever to the side for difflock ( which is worth you trying if you have it) then its the LT230. If its just LNH then its BW with viscous coupling
