VC is very unlikely to be your problem, failure mode is when it seizes and you notice the front wheels scrubbing on sharp turns. Either way, you can jack up a front wheel (in neutral and handbrake on). You should be able to turn the wheel by hand, not easily but it will turn if VC is not seized. The BW box has a chain (rather than gears of the LT230) which can fail.
Have you had a good look at the high/low linkage? It may be a bit sticky and not engaging fully, they are prone to it as often go years without being used and seldom lubricated

Yes that all seems to working ok and drove it in low range a couple of days before it gave up the ghost. Will double check it again though,and thanks for advise.
