I’ve just bought a Series 1, with a Series 2 gearbox. Reverse was working fine – until I got her home after a long journey. Now the gearlever will only push left against the spring, but won’t budge up into reverse (or down for that matter) at all. There’s no grinding, just the ability to move the lever laterally against the spring. It won’t then move up or down a single millimetre.

Any clues on what’s wrong and how to fix? I’m still waiting for the manuals to come through, so I don’t even yet know what the various parts are even called! Thanks!

If you that the reverse gate is not lifting then there is an adjustment screw if required or it may just require lubing.

If its not going into reverse then maybe the selector fork is slipping - removing the top cover will allow you to see.

the 3 selector jaws gear stick goes into have to be inline one shaft not qiute in neutral will stop another shaft been moved through the inter locks ,try moving each one to ensure its detented fully in neutral position

Not sure if its the same setup on the S2 box but I had an S3 which jammed into 1st, turned out to be one of the reverse gate springs had come off and jammed behind the stick. Take the transmission tunnel off and have a look.

I was sweating over the cost of a new gearbox and contemplating taking it to a garage to have a look at it when I read in the Haynes Restoration Manual that this happens a lot. Was a big relief to find the spring had indeed detached!

Thanks again for all your comments.

I took the top off. The reverse selector shaft will now run freely backwards and forwards with all the ball bearings and springs removed. They don’t cost much to replace, so I’ve ordered all new detent springs, ball-bearings, grommets, etc, and gear lever end o-ring. I’ll then just clean up all the parts, reassemble with a little Lithium grease around the ball-bearings and springs, and threadlock the threads. Much simpler than I expected. Am loving Series maintenance!

if your changing shaft seals dont forget to mark or reset fork to shaft they have play so that it can be adjusted fore/aft as well as rotationally
