Update, Garage rang me today I was hopeful for some kind of resolution. I was met with quite an aggressive tone on about gear box rebuilds at my cost mentioning solicitors. Now the Son said its was doing it when he drove it 20 ft into the garage before the works.... 2nd and 4th gears... Would you not contact the owner with your concern saying just before we start on your car there's grinding in the gear box.... this is after the owner test drove it the day before I picked it up and said there was no grinding!!!!!! I will leave it to decent minded people to make there own mind up!!!!!!!!

HI Wonky, I cant see where your from, but if you add your region on your profile you may find someone close who would be willing to help you do it,

How the hell can anyone get into 4th gear in 20 yds? Or even second?
Grinding could be synchro going but that rarely happens on 4th, on second yes frequently. But why not in third?
Wondering if they took the opportunity to swop your gearbox for another (dodgy) one which would explain everything!
Does it have any distiguishing marks you could check?
Mentioning solicitors this early on is very weird and highly suspicious.

I had a boss who used to work in a garage in Brum when he was a nipper, they would take a car in for service, remove a perfectly good part like a starter moter and replace it with a dodgy one, then when the owner came back tell them that they'd replace it with new, then put the old part back on.
Bastids!

Sound like a bunch of tossers to me.
They would have used 1st gear only.
The first thing you need is a full invoice detailing everything they did, as in exactly everything!
Then give them a chance to rectify, at their cost, I would not give them any more money.
Free legal advice should come with your insurance and AA cover.
Find a proper Land Rover garage in driving distance.

If you decide to Shame & Name them, then that would at least stop anyone else getting similar treatment, not to mention a drop in their income from no customers willing to trust them anymore

Ive been underneath with the guy who does all my minor works ( a mechanic) there is oil as shown in pictures which has ner been there before he says.... And i had my head under when it failed its mot.... Its all abit much to take in.
It was a 4x4 so called specialists.... Im look at solicitors as it comes with my bank account. So naming wouldnt be the right thing todo at this moment.
Pictures? What pictures?
If the gearbox has leaked its oil it is a no brainer that youd have this sort of noise. Maybe they disturbed a gasket somewhere along the line.
