I have a 2001 65.000 miles TD5 manual. It's a superb car and I love it to bits.But............................nine times out of ten about 1 or two seconds after I have started the car a funny noise appears from behind the dash area:confused:  .It sounds a bit like a relay or something connected to the starting procedure???.Every now and then it doesn't do it?A friend of mines TD5 does the same??? What is it,can I fix it??

Try putting your foot on the brake, see if you get shudder that corresponds with the noise, if so, it's normal and it's the ABS power up self test...

Well Done!!!!:D That's it!!I did what you said and felt a shudder through the brake pedal. It seems to be a very crude sort of noise for what is a very nice car???I have owned a lot of cars in my time but this is the first one that's done it???Is there any way to stop it,or quieten it??

you wouldnt want to... this is also the traction control self test (I think!)

put it down to the charm of the car :)

I used to have a Ford Puma which had the same self test on every start up. It was very loud, sounded like a plastic ruler held over the edge of a table and pinged!

for what its worth, as the answer has already been given, mine also does it. two sources, independent and dealer both said the same.
