I have just a 300tdi Discovery auto on a "V" reg yes "V" reg
it has an immolibliser problem, but the chap was selling as he had just bought a td5 and this one was making a funny noise now and again,

I over rode the immobiliser by giving the soleniod on the fuel pump and finding the starter wire

it started ran made a noise now and again, the noise sounded to coming from the front, it was rattle simular to a tin can but the engine went to stall when coming down from being revved

I found the bottom pulley loose then when removed it was cracked, ever the optimist I started the engine minus the pulley, quiet for while then the noise came back, got louder then the engine stopped

now when you try to start the starter spins and not the engine

Are we talking flexy plate?

cheers

ISnt there a harmonic damper on the front pully for a reason?

I'd suspect having removed that and the big bolt that something unfortunate has happened to the keyways and the crank sprocket and the valve and pump timing now leaves a lot to be desired. Front cover off the engine and check I think....
