Am I expecting a bit much to want more than 16 mpg out of a 52 plate Td5 Disco 2 - usage is mostly short hops in an out of work etc - not too bad on a run.... begining to think I should have bought a V8 - at least it would have sounded nice :D.

My W reg Disco TD5 always averages 33-34 mpg each tankful and that is mainly doing short hops (3.5x2 miles) to the shops with the occasional longer run to each tank.

Sounds a bit low to me, I can easily get mid 30's from my 03 TD5 Defender 90, again mainly used for short runs.

Thanks guys I thought as much as my old 300Tdi returned a lot better economy - did I say it was an auto would that make much difference....

Ok so if its low- critical question is I suppose what can I do to check or improve it ??

stick a ping pong ball or a raw egg to the bottom of yer right foot and drive without crushing it

Ping Pong Ball or Egg - let me think :)..................... well its not as if I hammer it everywhere, in fact my commute to work is pretty much through suburbia so not much chance... the CAT has been removed (before I bought the motor) would that make much or any difference ??

Also no tow bar fitted and no evidence that one ever has either so motor is not nor has not been that stressed - had a new fuel pump fitted not long before I bought it could that be doing anything

No evidence of leaks anywhere which is a novelty for me with a land rover having had multiple Series 1,2,2a 3 etc .......

My 02 plate disco Td5 does about 27 mpg and although I dont "hammer it" I do drive it fairly hard.

I did a week driving more sedately and got 20% more.

Mine has done 165000 miles. so not new.
So I recon you definitely have a problem.

If it isnt leaking out it must be burning it so I would have thought it would have been quite smokey??

That is very low !.

Air filter, MAF sensor, or has been said, something dragging.

As above, my 02 Disco, at the very worst does 26mpg, and thats all short trips and towing.

Cheers.

if u want economy buy a fiesta diesel..

if not put up with the aerodynamics of a brick the size of a large boat with the same handleing and put smiles per gallon first

Thanks for feedback people - I did not buy it for economy, far from it, having had land rovers for several years now I am all to familiar with their unique aerodynamics and foibles but even I struggled with 16mpg from a td5 with only 90k on the clock. Taking all into account looks like I will have to get the old girl checked out - again thanks to all, always helps to ask those that know :)
