Seriously tho.

Can you not use a ratchet strap to hold it in place somehow while you offer up the cradle then pull the strap out?

Can you not fit it thru any of the small cross bars that support the boot floor. Long time since I have looked but is there not small channel where the boot floor is scolloped for strength?

Or even a thin rope just to support an empty tank.

From memory when I fitted mine I waited till the tank was nearly empty before starting then I believe I put an jack at one end of the tank (nearest the rear bumper I think)
Then manhandled the guard up the the boot holes nearest the front of the car. Slotted them in then it was a case of remove the jack and try to pin the tank up with one hand as I lifted the guard up to it.
Wedged them both in place with leg/elbow/shoulder and slotted the remaining two bolts in place.

Mine was fitted by bolting it on top of the existing cradle straps. Do one side with an empty tank stays in place, offer up new guard and loosely bolt, removed bolts from other side, there is just enough space, and then you can fit the new guard on with the tank having fallen a little bit. Tricky but it works.
 
When I did mine the tank was half full, I propped it up just in case with some axle stands on concrete blocks. Fitting took less than 15 mins. I did have to use the trolley jack to push the tank back up to line up some of the bolts

replaced mine with what looks to be identical. as previous run tank down. I then used jack to support while I removed all the bolts (4 off) I slowly lowered the jack to see if the tank would drop it didn't. so as soon as there was room I removed the old and used the jack to push the new guard into place. to make it easier I had to cut a small piece out to clear the tow bracket.

Had to modify the guard tho - don't they think you might have a tow hitch on an off road Disco?
All my bolts had been replaced, to ensure they wouldn't be seized.
Lucky I changed it - see pics of removed strap :eek:!

Likewise I was not looking forward to it. Stories of seized bolts tank dropping etc. However like you it was surprisingly straightforward. All nuts came off easy and tank stayed put. My cradle has rusted through one side and was resting on the arb.

What gave me a bit of confidence was id heard how difficult it is to actually remove and refit the tank dur to its shape
 
i did put wedges through the bump stop brackets, but i aint sure if they would have actually stopped anything.
