My FL stopped today and breakdown came out. It wouldnt start at all and just cut out whilst driving.

Mechanic who turned out gave a hefty smack, with a rubber mallett, under the rear offside wheel arch and it did the trick! He seemed to think it was the fuel pump and I tend to agree. I am presuming that this is the in tank fuel pump. However I notice that under the rear seats there seems to be another 'pump'(?) access. I would have thought this would be the in tank access. Is this right and is it something completely different under the wheel arch?

Thanks

Under the rear seats on the drivers side is the fuel pump. It has a locking ring around the top which you can remove with a flat Blade screwdriver and a hammer.

Thanks guys I have a 51 plate td4. Would the pump under the rear seat be 'fixable' by bashing underneath the wheel arch?

Sorry if I sound thick....its because I am!

No the fuel pump is under the wheel arch in later models - 2003 onwards I think.

Your 51 plate will have a pump in the fuel tank, another low pressure pump in the engine bay - this feeds the high pressure injector pump.

My FL is an October 2001. I've tried to check in a Haynes manual and it seems to suggest that there is 3 fuel pumps but from the recovery guy he checked one to the right of the engine compartment behind the battery. He also went under the wheel arch and thumped away with a rubber mallett and it started. I've found the blanking plate under the seats in the rear and I'm now confused(?). Have I got an in tank pump or is it under the wheel arch. I am truly confused.com. Any suggestion? If it helps I been quoted £214 + vat by Ultimate Landrover. Does this suggest where it may be?

For your age/model there is a pump in the tank and not under the arch easily confirmed by removing the access plate and checking you have a 4 pin connection rather than a 2 pin on the later tank unit without a pump.
Google Td4 in tank pump or WFX500070. Huge difference in prices so shop around....

On your's you have two pumps one in the engine bay and one in the tank. The tank pump incorporates the sender unit as well. The later ones as stated went to a single pump in the rear wheel arch. Do a search on this site about the pumps and how to check.

Hi Andy
This is the fuel filter in the off side rear wheel arch. The same thing has happened to my dad's TD5 and we're trying to get some info about how to get it running again. Basically it cut out on him the same way yours did on you. It starts and runs for about 10 seconds then dies with black smoke coming from the exhaust.
Any ideas anyone ??

Mines going in on Tuesday for it to be replaced completely. Genuine LR part a tadge expensive but friendly and trusted garage owner doing it for £250. £170 for the part the rest labour. Checked with LR and they confirmed its filter/pump and was £200+ from them.

Mine wont start at all now unless its cranked and bashed!
