I wasn't having a dig at anyone, just advising to check first. There are several manufacturers who make switchable 2 to 4WD or vice versa , it's not a new idea.
 
wise words I reckon _ Insurance companies will do anything not to pay out on a claim - I even told mine about the Roverron box.

I seem to recall the Fiat Panda 4x4's had a switchable system (actually I know rather than recall because, as a rather niave 20year old, I tried switching at about 40mph - d'oh!!!)
 
Our Jeep Cherokee had switchable 2WD/4WD and Part-Time 4WD - 2w/4w was switchable any any sensible road speed.
Needless to say the car was only ever run using 2 x wheels.

Good point ref the insurance company - The problem would be how to go about asking them, as most people in these call-centre's don't have a clue (No offence intended) and can only go by what their computer screen tells them, ala Little Britain's "Computer says noooo" sketch.

Anyway, hopefully I won't have to disable 4WD, but nice to know incase the VCU ever goes belly up.

I used to work in an accident repair centre. We never had a crashed freelander in WITH a propshaft as they had to be removed in order to tow them in. I doubt an insurance inspector would dirty his knees to look underneath for "modifications" but I do agree they can be swines for throwing a claim out. Known claims be thrown out over a tow bar before now.
 
I wasn't thinking so much of a minor bump, as a proper accident where something serious happens, and the police crawl all over the vehicles involved. If they should find the prop shaft missing you are going to be in deep ****e.
