Help needed again please????

When closing the front drivers side window (of course), the window raises, but when it gets to the top there’s a very loud knocking/banging within the door and the window won’t set.

Its movement both up and down is fairly jerky. . .

First question: how expensive?? J

Second question: any advice on how I can fix it myself?

The window raze mechanism comes as a complete unit, there is a toothed cog that meshes with a large half moon shaped cog that then drives the window up or down, It sounds like one of the cogs may be missing a tooth, or it could be that they have drifted apart a little, I would take a look you mite be able to do something with it.
To fit a new unit diy is possible, bear in mind you have to remove the glass from the lift support rail

its the window regulator mechanism, its worn! there a cog that turns a quadrant shaped part to raise/lower the window, the teeth are worn so when it gets to a point were it can no longer move the gears teeth slip over those on the quadrant shape part and it goes bang bang bang as it jumps a tooth.
i did mine in 30 mins and that included drilling out the rivits holding the motor to the regulator, the motor dont come with it!, it came with new rivits but dont forget you will need a pop rivit gun.
i payed at main stealer £90 odd a fair while ago now.
i have seen them on ebay since then conciderably cheaper too!

beaten to it by seconds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(i didnt have to remove my glass!)

Thank you Ironhorse, much appreciated.
Ah, its that simple - had to replace the sissor mech on an ol'rover. . .

"to remove the glass from the lift support rail" - can the glass be help up with tape??

Check the regulator fixing screws aren't loose before you go to the expense of buying a new regulator!!
the fixing screws wont give the teeth any distance apart, therefor wont cause the jumping, you get one clunk when up and one when down but it should opperate and set ok with just loose screws!

If the fixings are loose you will get a knock noise as the fixings move in the holes in the inner panel. I'm just giving another cause of regulator knock noise not refuting that the regulators segment may be damaged but worth checking before you go to the expense of buying a new regulator all the same!

even so it wont give a knock knock knock from loose screws! single knock maybe, but not continuous until button released, i have had the same fault.
dont waste ya time removing the door trim before getting a new regulator, theres no point doing it twice and the more you remove a door trim the more you run the risk of breaking the retaining clips that hold it on................
