Hi im new to this forum i have been trying to figure out what the strange noise is coming from my freelander And wondered if anyone else has experienced this. Sounds like the air box is off when blipping the throttle then once its reved up its fine.

How does it run apart from the noise? Has the MPG suddenly fallen or any other symptoms?

It runs fine no the mpg is still ok im trying to upload a video but im struggling. Im thinking it may be the timing belt tensioner but i could be miles off

If it's at the front of the engine (timing belt end) then it's going to be something in that area. So look at belts, tensioners and idler pulleys. Also when was the timing belt changed, and were new idlers fitted at the same time?

Could be that or the water pump which drives off the timing belt, have you had a new timing belt fitted? You can find a few helpful posts on the Fl2 forum but it's never a good idea to diagnose just on e mail, Fl 2 is a very good vehicle but has a few common failures like the rear diff, and haldex unit. Mine has developed an annoying vibration at about 18,00 rpm which others have also seen but haven't found a solution yet.

Ive only had the vehicle just over a year and looking in the service book theres no mention of a replacement timing belt its covered 95000 now so i might aswell put one on it while im inspecting that area i see you can get a kit with everything water pump ect

Thanks ive told my wife not to use it untill i get chance to havd a better look as if it is the timing belt tensioner it could end badly. Yes this one has an annoying drone so i think its rear diff is also a issue. Other than that its a very nice car and my wife loves it

mine has a similar sounding vibration under acceleration,i can`t find the fault either:mad:
I looked on the Fl2 forum and there were a few posts describing the problem mostly accelerating with engine speed at 1800 rpm, cant find a definitive solution, seen people do stuff from new tyres, exhaust touching the heat sheilds, to change auto box fluid.
I intend to get on it when the weather gets better.
Did the diff last year and I added a magnetic oil drain plug at the same time, now I intend to change the oil every year.

I can`t remember if the prop turns all the time or only if the front wheels start to slip, that would make me think it was a prop bearing
vibrating at a certain speed like a wheel that judders if not balanced properly.

On the fl2 the front wheels are driven all the time and the prop shaft is driven, but there is a clutch on the rear diff which engages electronically when the front wheels slip, or when you put your foot down as in pulling away quickly, then you have 4 wheel drive, the pinion bearings in the diff are a bit underrated and sometimes give up.
My vibration seems to be related to engine revs, but could be prop, or drive shaft, hope to track it down soon.
It only started when I had the timing belt changed, and new idler pulley fitted.

Update had a chance to look at the car this afternoon once i took the drive belt off for the alternator ect the noise stopped took the timeing cover off to inspect the belt and its all ok in there ive ordered a kit to do it anyway. So it looks like its either the drive belt itself alternator power steering pump or the air con compressor

Hope that sorts it let us know.

The bearing on the AC compressor pulley should spin freely and silently, when spun by hand, as should the alternator rotor.

mines the same - a hollow growl i would call it - i changed tensioner and belt which helped for while - it then went into the garage for a long time and they said it was the AC as it stopped when this was off. they then changed the tensioner again and it sort of cured it for a while again - so looking like a bearing somewhere. if i ever get motivated again for the FL2 the next step would be a belt for a no air con engine to see what happens.... glad im not the only one....

It seems to be a fairly common thing do we need a separate thread on here to pool the information and see if we can find a common solution?

Got this sorted today was the alternator pulley the clutch was seized what a pig of a job getting that off. So i just replaced the whole unit all going fine now back on the road. Will do the timing belt when i have more time out of intrest does anyone know the correct interval for the belt change it’s currently on 97000 miles

I think it is 80,000 miles as I was talking to a man who had one and he says he has just had it done at 80'000 miles
