Bonjour, I bought a Freelander1 TD4 2003 with automatic gearbox that works fine except for the reverse gear.
Does anyone know this problem, oil level is good and no mistake made with the wrong plug,

If no mistake has been made by removing the wrong bolt, then the reverse brake band has worn out. This is often due to the reverse piston leaking, either through a crack in the piston itself, or the seals leak fluid past.
Unfortunately it's one of the most likely mechanical faults on this gearbox.

Checksum errors are normally related to a software glitch. Clear the code and see if it comes back.
 
I had to do it once. Not fun on the drive on axle stands. Procedure is in RAVE.

Once it's out, sorting the reverse band is quite easy.
 
i just finished a auto box swap on a volvoxc70 but took it out with the engine included, two days job and a lot of bad words,
i take a look in the haynes book, thanks
 
in the mean time i checked the solenoid resistance, only the line pressure solenoid is high 3.7 (2.6-3.2)
 
I'm in the process of finishing mine which lost reverse (the only difference being I didn't buy it with no reverse so I knew it was the reverse band that had snapped). As said fairly common problem for the band to break (you get the same issue/symptoms if you remove the wrong bolt when draining the oil). It's not a job I'd undertake again just having the vehicle on axle stands as the g/box weighs a ton, best of luck.
 
hi, i found an other gearbox but how can i test the reverse band is there a way to check it before i change it with mine?

One way is to take it apart. (If the box is on floor or bench it's quite easy.) The other way is to fit the box & see if everything works.

Reverse band is the copper coloured bit around clutch assembly on the left of the pictures below.

the gearbox in the car has ref; PRO08 and the one i found ref; PRO16 , mine is td4 diesel
and the other one maybe from a petrol car, so i will repair mine i think its better
 
Also while it's all out, if you place the torque converter over a bucket & drain the fluid, then when filling you get new fluid through the transmission (rather than mixing old & new)
