Hi all,
Mid life crisis! Have a Freelander 1 td4 3dr 2006. Owned for over a year, very happy. Currently have basic alloys (5 spoke standard) with 215/65/16. I am looking to buy a set of Sport alloys (9 spoke) from the sport model (official LR wheels). complete with tyres 235/60/18. Will they fit straight on, if so do I have to fiddle with the gear drive speedo cable to adjust the new speedo reading?

You'll be fine. A 235/60 18 has a diameter of 29.1 inches. Speedo is calibrated for 28.6 inches.

Speed is derived from abs wheel sensors not a cable in the gearbox. That is so last century !!

Many thanks, picking them up Wednesday, starting to panic on sizes, speedo, fittings, turning lock etc! Good to know from someone who knows!

They are a direct fit, but also you can increase the tyres to 235/55/18, the standard Sport size being 235/50/18.

You can't alter the speedometer as it's completely electronic, so there's no drive gears as it takes the speed signal from the ABS ECM.
However 235/55/18 tyres will make the speedo more accurate, as its calibrated about 10% optimistic as standard.
Going to 60% 18" tyres will make the speedo read slow, which is technically illegal.
Also you might run into clearance issues with the struts.

Here's the clearance to the strut with a 235/55/18 the mild treaded Cooper Discoverer tyre on the FL1.

Hi,

18 alloys whells will certainly look better, but they are more exposed if you park your car in the street.

Good picture there. Any taller tyre size means you should use something like 30 mm spacer to get enough clearance.
