Any help?
Bought a freelander , guy said he thinks the brakes were sticking on at the front near side, sounds like it to me too,
Took it to a local garage , mechanics said there not sticking and bearing appear to have no play.
When driving it sounds more like a rumble and there's vibration , hard to pinpoint the exact location of the sound but its quite loud and the vibrations there all the time , sounds better the faster you go , not that its actually sounds good at all .
Prop still in place
2ltr diesel 1998 model , passed its mot today with no advisories (lucky eh)
Any help?
Cheers rob

Hi , if I removed the prop and the sound has gone does this point to the vcu bearing
If I remove the prop and its still there what else could it be.?
Thanks for the advice its appreciated
Cheers rob

Remove both front and rear probs. If it's the VCU bearings then the rumble should stop. If it doesn't stop then the tyres would be my next check.
I get a slight rumble from my VCU for the first 1/2 mile of my daily commute which I've put down to the fluid in the VCU settling to the bottom over night.

are all the 4 tires the same? Freelanders don't like diferent threads on their wheels
VCU bearings would be my next guess

Hi , removed the full prop and the sound has gone
How easy is the vcu bearing to change

Rumble has now gone after removing the full prop
How easy is it to change the vcu bearing?
Is it a garage job , props already off.

Hi don't think it's so hard, do a search on here you will find something, i think the vcu is about £200 notes exchange from bell engineering, then you need the bearings as well, you can send your vcu to bell and they will test it for you, might save you a few quid if its only the bearings.

good luck,

ps leave the prop off till you get it sorted, or it might bugger up the ird.

Hi,
If you do a search on you-tube for freelander /vcu bearing change there is a very good step by step shot there. I think Hippo has one also, hope this helps all you need is a decent set of spanners. when you have done it post the time/any problems ect her it always helps

I did the VCU with the support bearings already fitted (from Bells) a couple of weekends ago. I also did the front diff mount at the same time. If it wasn't for the rain arriving it would have been done (from scratch) in a long morning and short afternoon - I am not a seasoned mechanic and don't have the best selection of tools but what I have are good quality. Whilst I left WD40 soaking into the VCU splines I got on wth the diff mount which was a fiddle but not that bad. Getting back to the VCU the rear prop came off easily, the front was a bugger and I broke a stone chisel in the process. It came off in the end with steady perseverence Re-assembly is quite straightforward. If you buy a recon from Bells they will talk you through it on the phone.
I was amazed at the difference it has made. No vibrations (probably the new bearings) and no tightness on turning small circles.
