Hiyall

I have a Freelander TD4 HSE auto on a 55 plate;) and what I would like to ask all you boffins out there the following questions on tuning my landy.

  1. I have read of a modified EGR bypass valve, does this gadget work? my neighbour has a disco and he says it does, what do you guys think?
  2. I have also be reading of these "chips" which can increase the bhp to 150, have any of you fitted thes and if so which one do you recommend.
  3. I am interested to hear of any good tuning mods which are available for my Landy.:confused: :confused:

might be speaking out of turn here, 'cos not been brave enough to try any of the following myself, but I'm sure other members will be happy to correct me in as sarcastic a manner as possible.

The benefit of bypassing the egr valve can be had by simply disconnecting the small bore blue pipe connected. There is a thread on here somewhere if you search for it.

As for chip upgrades, the word about the cheaper ones on ebay for example, perhaps not suprisingly, is that they are not worth a w**k. some, in their crudest form are just a resistor which is connected to the incoming air flow sensor, which fools the ecu into thinking the incoming air is colder than it is. The ecu then overfuels the engine giving supposedly better performance.

By far the most recommended modification on this forum, and in one of the threads, it goes so far as to say freelander td4 auto loves it, is by roverron.

The disconecty pipey doings, dint make any difference on mine, but give it a go, dunt cost out, and sept fer opening the bonnet and pullin off the pipe ,Takes seconds ;)

The EGR bypass does more than just disconnecting it. It removes the 40% obstruction to the airflow that the valve mechanism causes. Over 60 have been sold and not one owners said it was a waste of money, or made no difference....

Once EGR By-Pass is fitted is it important to blank of the vacom pipe? I did this when I fitted EGR By=Pass to my TD4 and after day or so the engine mades a whinning sould as if a motor war spinning free and slowing down. Any ideas?
 
I know, why don't you hit every thread you can find on the subject with the same question ?

I've got an 03 plate Td4 Auto & have fitted both the egr bypass & the Roverron Synergy & they are both well worth the effort.
When I first got my car it was slower than treacle.
Firstly I did a full service including replacing that all important crankcase breather filter assy which helped a little.
Next up I tried just removing & blanking the egr vacuum hose which gave a slight improvement on lighter "throttle" openings, so I got the egr bypass, fitted that & found a real noticeable improvement across the rev range.
I then followed Rons recommendations & started using Millers Powersport 4 diesel additive at every fill-up but found it needed to be used at double the recommended dose, & found this to be a great boost after about a thousand miles or so when it had fully cleaned out the system (I wouldn't be without it now).
Finally I treated myself to one of Rons synergy units which took it to another level, though you'll have to follow Rons instructions on the maximum setting for the automatic box which I think was position 6 from memory.

The only very slight downside has been that the auto box has been a little less smooth with the changes compared to when the car had nearly zero power although it's not massively noticeable & the auto box will hang on to the higher gears for longer (good for economy) before needing to change down - this can feel strange going up a hill sometimes it feels a bit like a manual car being in too high a gear though a prod on the old accelerator soon sorts that out.

Economy wise I found the egr bypass to be worth about 1-2mpg better or so, the Millers gave about 3mpg improvement & fitting the synergy made it 1mpg worse though I was using the extra power that it offered.

I would definitely recommend that you go for it, it will transform your car though even with the 150+bhp it's still a typical auto diesel with what feels like a narrow power band. Where you'll be massively impressed is going up steep hills like they aren't there even from a standing start. This still impresses me with mine 18 months later.

you wont regret it.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but with so many topics on this subject it seemed pointless to start another.

Ive just changed from a Xsara Picasso 2.0hdi getting 42.9mpg average to a 2003 TD4 Freelander and am now getting 32.8mpg over the last tank.

With the extra running costs in fuel alone I'm thinking of purchasing a tuning box that will pay for itself within 3-4months. My prime objective is to increase fuel economy. Im not interested in increasing performance although if it comes as a by product then Ill happy run with it.

I realise that the Synergy box is quite popular but had hoped to spend in around the £100.00 mark and found this on ebay (Land Rover Freelander TD4 Economy Tuning Chip Box on eBay (end time 23-Jun-10 13:17:25 BST)). Its a Pro-Bitz unit at £105.00.

Four questions really:
1. What experience does anyone have long term and on a high mileage car (mine has 105k on it) with the Pro-Bitz or Synergy box?
2. Is it safe enough to fit to a high mileage car without added reliability issues over fitting to a lower mileage vehicle.
3. What sort of economy are your guys getting in the long term with the Synergy vs Pro-Bitz or any other recommended unit for that matter.
4: Does fitting the tuning box bring with it any problems or additional maintenance items to keep in mind?

Fitted a Synergy 2 to my TD4 Auto, an absolute transformation, throttle response is instant, overtaking safer, a much nicer drive now. Only downside is the connections, they look a bit "homemade", am a little bit worried as to what will happen when (not if !) they get covered in mud during offroading,

Only downside is the connections, they look a bit "homemade", am a little bit worried as to what will happen when (not if !) they get covered in mud during offroading,
hi where about due you fit the chip trying to locate the rail sensor but not sure where it is just bought freelander so new to me
