Hi, my Freelander has started to make a knocking sound whe i go round a roundabout, it dosnt happen all the time, My first thought was CV joint , but which 1 ?. as I said it only now and again,
any Ideas ???
Thanks

Is it a regular, rotational knock or more random with the road bumps? Could be as simple as an anti-roll bar link pin. Have a passenger stick their head out the window or more safely find a large open space (car park) and circle around said volunteer in both directions. Knocking CV joints usually do so on the inner front wheel i.e. offside if turning right and nearside if going left.

Can go for long enough if you can put up with it. A new complete shaft is only about £70and not the trickiest to fit.

You can squeeze underneath and try and turn and pull at the prop shafts. Any movement in the bearings will show up then. Different if they are seized though, the car needs to be up in the air with all four wheels dangling. You'll feel it soon enough as it should all turn quite smoothly there being no wheel to ground resistance. If they are seized you will most likely see wear where the joints are trying to pop apart.

My experience was that the rubber around the bearing looked a little worse for wear. Couldn't feel any play though, only traced noise by removing prop shaft.
Not the most common cause of this noise though so I would check inner cv joint first. If its outer then may be grease on inside of wheel. Sometimes they leak grease when they go so looking under with a torch may help. Jack up front & shuffle under head first and look back toward the front.
Other culprits of noise could be a broken spring (sometimes not as easy to diagnose as you would think) or shock.

Most common knocking noises from/near a front wheel:

1. steering arm ball joint at the bottom of the strut worn
2. driveshaft worn
3. steering joint worn at top of strut
4. Anti Roll Bar drop link worn
5. Anti roll bar knocking against a strut (caused by bumpers wearing off the ARB)
6. Bearings in wheel hub have worn
