Hi - I just wondered if anyone could offer any advice. My 2004 Freelander TD4 has just blown up without warning. The garage says the engine has seized and needs a new one and a new turbo. Now we're not sure whether its worth it - the cost of a new engine, new turbo and labour will be phenomenal but just to scrap it would be a big loss too. Would it be worth finding a second hand engine with a turbo and having that fitted? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

welcome to the dark side :welcome2:, a quick introwould be nice , to answer your question , YOU bought a freelander :hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi

I'd say it was ****ed unless you can find a second hand engine

well soreeee - sounds like I don't know what I'm doing - you're right , new to forums, cars everything. People have no patience, just like drivers on the road, think I'll give up then and go for public transport

At least you'll get there and back. :D:D:D

clouds of smoke from exhaust, high revs, turned ignition off but it kept on running for 10 or 15 seconds, then loud noise. Engine wouldn't turn over after that so had it towed to a garage who said it looked like turbo gone and engine seized

It's the bus for you from now on mate. :D

Sounds like you had a diesel run away, the tubro seals have likely failed and the engine has ran on its own oil, over revved and then threw a rod or something.

Google landrover breakers and give them a call in the morning, they should be able to sell you a replacement engine. Then find a local garage to swap them over.

You can replace it for a couple of grand i would recon.

Plenty 2nd hand engines on eBay, 'buy it now'.

My advice would be to first find an independent garage who could swap them over.

Hi sorry to hear about your plight. This is every TD4 owners nightmare, course of action for a run away is to stall the engine asap. I did not know this untill a friends TD4 Turbo blew, we live and learn. Hope you get it sorted. I.J
